Gehrdes Wins
Hurdle Test
Providing one of the few
bright spots on the rather dismal
weekend card of the Nittany
Lions, Jim Gehrdes outsprinted
Ed Dugger to capture the New
York Athletic Club's 60-yard
title in New York Saturday.
The Lion timber topper zipped
through the quarter-final round
and then placed second to Bill
Mitchel in the semi-final in 7.4
seconds. Facing George Sylvester
of West Point, Dugger, Mitchell
and Gehrdes raced over the hur
dles in 7.2, just one-tenth of a
second above the world'- record
for the 60-yard race.

came the fourth American to
break nine minutes in the two
mile run, but placed fourth be
hind the am zing Gaston Reiff of
Belgium wo burned up the
track with an 8:53.8 timing.

Captain Georgie Schautz fought
gamely with Lehigh' s unbeaten
121-pounder, Mike Filipos, but
was edged, 6-5, when the Brown
and White matman received a
point for time advantage.
In othe r bouts, Don Arbuckle
was decisioned by Eastern king
Dick Kelsey in the 136-pound
class, while Captain Ed Erikson
beat 165-pound Bob Hetrick, and
Jim Jackson, also an EIWA cham
pion, bested Bob Markle at 175
pounds. Scores of these matches
were identical, 8-4.

apart. It was the first time in the
history of Penn State skiing that
a racer hasn't fallen in this event.
The Lions gained seventh place
in the downhill and sixth in the
slalom to take sixth place in the
Alpine Combined.
In the cross-country and jump
events, efforts of Captain Cliff
Carts, who was declared eligible
at the beginning of the semester,
Bill. Graf and Jim Raymond en
abled the Foggmen to take third
place in • the Classic Combated.
Bud Bankert, who gave a good
account of himself in the St. Law
rence Carnival, lost a ski at six
different times in the cross-coun
try event but managed to finish
17th among 32 competing.
Fast Work
Grant Dixon, Nittany wrestler
who graduated at mid-year, com
pleted his college course in three
and one-half years. The former
Eastern 155-pound champ won
two out of three bouts in '49 be
fore he was lost to the team.
