College Grows Large Heads
For Medal Winning Entry
The College has added a new twist to its plan of turning out
well developed heads: These heads have leaves, and won bronze
medals for their producer, Professor Milton T. Lewis.
Of the seven superior new vegetables winning All-America
Selections awards for 1949, two were developed at the College by
Professor Lewis. These are both new varieties of head lettuce, rep-
resenting the "fruit" of many
years' effort.
Both lettuce introductions were
awarded the bronze medal in the
All-America tests, and are being
featured in the new seed cata
logs. They are the "Premier
Great Lakes" and the "Penn
lake," both producing heat-re
sisting, solid heads to outdo the
previous winner, Great Lakes.
The "Premier Great Lakes" is
resistant to tipburn, and in trials
produced over 90 per cent mar
ketable heads in summer, an un
usual record of performance. The
"Pennlake" makes a smaller
head that is expected to be popu
lar with home gardeners.
More than 6 tons of seed of the
new varieties were produced last
year in California, and since only
one to two pounds are needed to
seed an acre, it is apparent that
considerable acreage could be in
the new varieties this year.
Since 1933, only seven lettuce
varieties have been listed, indi
cating that introduction of two
new varieties by one breeder is
What makes it worth having
By ITSELF, a Bell telephone is useless. What
makes it so valuable to you is that it brings
the world within easy speaking distance when con
nected to the Bell System network.
This network has billions of parts. AU kad to be
designed and manufactured to work together for
good telephone service.
To assure a dependable source of good equip
ment that will work together with all other parts of
the nation-wide telephone network,Western Electric

Bell System.

people who operate it. Result: You get the most de
pendable, most valuable telephone service en earth.

a rarity in a single year. Cross
pollination of lettuce blossoms is
a time-consuming job, and many
years of experimentation are
necessary before a new variety
can be safely introduced.
For example, Imperial 847, one
of the parents of Pennlake, took
14 years to be bred. Premier
Great Lakes was bred from heads
selected in 1942 by Prof. Lewis,
who had obtained the strain from
its originator.
Both new varieties of the let
tuce have consistently produced
heads weighing up to two
pounds, each in lengthy trials.

Ratings Finished
By Council
Education Student Council has
completed the course ratings
which were compiled from the
questionnaires filled out by stu
dents in the School of Education
last year. The purpose of these
ratings is to help the teachers
plan their courses more towards
the students' viewpoint, and to
help students select the proper
subjects.
The courses rated were educa
tion 1, an introductory course;
education 52, a secondary educa
tion course; and education 70, a
course in test measurements.
One of the interesting points
brought out concerned the ques
tion: "Has it (the course) opened
new fields of thought for you?"
The education 1 group answered
with 100% agreement; then, as
the subjects increased in com
plexity and consequently in repe
tition, the percentages dropped
to 83% for education 52, and to
70% for education 70.
In a question about the val
idity of the exams, the introduc
tory course received highest per
centage of approval. The' courses
were also rated according to diffi
culty. The most advanced course,
educational measurements, re
ceived 100% agreement that it
was a hard subject; 88% of the
same group felt that the course
credit should be increased; how
ever none of those taking the sec
ondary education course felt that
credit should be increased, and
only 11% of the introductory ed
ucation group agreed on that
question.
Joseph Daniels, president of the
Education Student Council ex
pressed this opinion of the rat
ings: "Student rating of courses,
if carried out properly with the
cooperation of the student body,
will be of help to the students as
well as to the professors in being
able to eliminate weak points of
particular courses."
