THE DAILtY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE. PENNSYLVANIA
The Nittclly Realm
On January 29, the Lions' opening boxing date, the Brownsville
Bombardier, alias Chuck Drazenovich, with revenge-packed mitts
will seek to subdue the one opponent who handed him his lone set
back of last year's ring cam
paign, Joe Corleto of Western
Maryland.
Chuck's ring career started
one afternoon last year when
the Nittany blocking back was
working out in Rec Hall. "The
genial doctor" of Penn State
boxing wars, Leo Houck, spied
the 210-pounder and asked him
to work out with the boxing
team which was in dire need
for a heavyweight contestant.
Although a terror on the foot
ball field, Chuck never engaged
in the ring sport except for a
few practice bouts while serv
ing with Uncle Sam during the
war
GREEN
After only two weeks of prac
tice before the Lions' 48 meet
against Western Maryland, Dra
zenovich settled down for the
hard work ahead but he was still green for his opponent, JOe Corleto,
then a veteran of two seasons and the intercollegiates.
The Western Maryland battler copped the first round, 10-9. The
next two rounds ended in 10-10 stalemates, thus giving Corleto the
match by a one-point margin.
Several times Corleto maneuvered Drazenovich into the corner

Swimmers Seek First Win
In Second Home Encounter
The Penn State tankmen will be seeking their first victory of
the 1949 season Saturday when they play host to Temple in Glenn
land pool. The meet is slated for 2 p.m.
The Owls from Philadelphia will be after win number two. They
defeated Swarthmore in their season opener at Conwell Hall at
Temple by a close 41-34 score.
According to Coach Bill Gutteron, the Nittany Lion squad will
have the same lineup that opposed
Cornell in the initial encounter.
Earlier this week Gutteron di
vided his team and held an intra
squad meet between Blue and
White teams. The meet was won
by the Blues headed by Cass Bo
rowy who copped first place in
the 50-yard dash. John McGrory,
White team leader, took first place
in the 220-yard free-style event.
Bill Ackerman, Temple's ace
dash man, will offer tough com
petition for Bill Schildmacher in
the sprints. Ackerinan scored a
double victory against Swarth
more by capturing first place in
the 50-yard dash and the 100-yard
free-style. Schildmacher set a var
sity record in the 100-yard free
style the last time out against
Cornell
If Cal Folmsbee can equal his
Cornell performance, the diving
team should gain its second tri
umph of the campaign. Cal got
the nod over the Big Red's John
Hosie, who had gone undefeated
through 1948. Rudy Valentino is
expected to continue to be Folms
bee's diving mate as he was against
the Ithacans.
Hopes for a Lion victory over
the Cherry and White are high.

Temple is not expected to offer
as strong competition as did Cor
nell, possessor of one of the tough
est teams in the East if not the
country.

Gehrdes vs. Dillard ...
Nation's Top Hurdlers
Vie in Inquirer Meet
Undefeated in his two major races this winter, Jim Gehrdes,
Penn State's top hurdler, will be put to the test this weekend when
he meets Harrison Dillard at the Philadelphia Inquirer meet Friday
night and again Saturday night at the Massachusetts Knights et,
Columbus meet in Boston.
Dillard, the sensational Baldwin-Wallace ace hurdler who west
through last year's competition undefeated only to lose in the Olympia
tryouts, has not competed on the
boards this year.
Other competition on the 50-
yard high hurdle race includes Ed
Dugger and Bill Mitchell, both of
whom Gehrdes outsprinted last
week to win the Washington Star
event.
Boxers Battle
For Starting
Mitt Positions
Western Maryland
Ushers in '49 Season
Sharpened by more than two
weeks of training, Coach Leo
Houck's ring aspirants have be
gun their quests of varsity berths
with daily three-round sparring
sessions.
Little more than a week of
training remains before the box
ing curtain-lifter at Rec Hall
January 29 against Western
Maryland's Green Terrors. The
mittmen will speed up their
training pace as the rounds are
lengthened, the candidates for
varsity berths will eventually
eliminate themselves until a suit
able starting lineup remains.
Hot slugfests are everyday at
tractions at the ring as ring en
thusiasts endeavor to win an
opening berth in one of six weight
classes in which starters are
needed. Houck has been well sat
isfied with the showing of his
captain, Johnny Benglian, and
his heavyweight protege, Chuck
Drazenovich.
STARTERS
Benglian, tipping the scales at
130 pounds, has assured a start
ing assignment in that division
while the 210-pound Drazenovich
is a cinch for the heavyweight
berth.
In the 125-pound class, compe
tition has been keen between
Fred Smith, last year's regular,
and Dave Evans, a returnee from
the '43 mitt squad.
Two of last season's 'S' winners
are currently vying for the 165,
pound class. Coming down from

He adds that Penn State will
probably be the only college par
ticipating in the Ligonier meet,
which is sanctioned for members
of the U. S. Eastern Amateur Ski
Association. The meet is for in
dividual championships in down
hill,slalom and cross country.
COPS EVENT
Gehrdes opened the winter track
season by copping the 120-yard
high hurdles event at the Sugar
Bowl games in New Orleans. His
second win was the 70-yard flat
shoe event at Washington last
week, and his third and fourth
attempts will be made this week
end.
"We're taking a twelve-man
squad to Philadelphia today," said
Coach Chick Werner. "Although
these boys aren't expected to place
high among the top competition
in the invitational meet, they need
the experience. With little in the
way of facilities in Rec Hall, the
team has to rely on such meets to
keep in practice."
HARRISON
Besides Gehrdes, Bob Harrison
will represent Penn State in the
hurdles, while in the Paddock 300,
Wilbert Lancaster will wear the
Blue and White. A mile relay team
composed of Bob Bour, John Mc-
Call, Paul Koch and Bill Lockhart
is entered in the college mile re
lay. Koch turned in the fastest
time of the time trials held Wed
nesday night, while Bour, McCall
and Lockhart followed close be
hind him in other heats.
In the other events Jack St. Clair
will compete in the two mile, Ron
Coder and Merle Sieber will pole
vault and Dick Reynolds and Vic
Fritts will high jump. The mile
relay team plus Gehrdes will go
on to Boston on a sleeper tonight,
and the remainder of the squad
will return to State College.
SARVER
Competition for depending In
quirer mile champ, Jerry Karver,
will be at the zenith Friday since
along with the usual American
nars, the meet officials have im
ported Swedish Olympian Ingvar
Bengtsson to compete in the mile.
Another Olympian from Swe
