NAACP Needs Help
Many people have heard of NAACP. But they
ask "What is it? What does it do?"
The National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People is composed of one-half million
American citizens, of all races, creeds, and colors,
working for full equality of every citizen. It op
poses racial segregation and discrimination in every
field, including housing, employment, education,
law, recreation, travel and the armed forces.
The NAACP is not restricted to Negroes. It was
founded by white people, and is actively run by
white and Negro together. Nor does the NAACP
restrict itself to Negro problems alone, but dedi
cates itself to any minority group that needs help,
socially or legally.
The local chapter of the NAACP is campaigning
for new members this week. The members want
people to work and think with them, and to share
with them the social satisfaction of belonging to
such a group.
The local chapter furthers its cause with social
cational forums. It carries on an. active program
mixers, picnics, record programs, cultural and edu
that brings together all creeds and races in work
ing cooperatively together for the immediate bene
fit of its own members.
Civil rights is a vital issue today in Congress, on
campus, and in our own minds. NAACP offers an
opportunity to personally meet—and solve—the
problems of racial and religious discrimination.
Anyone who has any feeling against discrimi
nation owes it to himself to take an active part in
NAACP's cause of planning, working and leading
a democratic program.
A booth will be maintained this week in the
lobby of Old Main where any interested person
may receive literature on the NAACP and sign up
for membership. The chapter meets every Wednes
day, time and place announced in the Daily Col
legian.

Blue Key Takes Step
After careful planning and extensive study the first, and biggest,
step of an organized program of extending hospitality and good will
to visiting athletes has been inaugurated by Blue Key, junior man's
hat society.
Through the efforts' of Blue Key an eight page booklet entitled
"Blue Key Hat Society Welcomes You to Penn State" is in its plan
ning stage and should be completed by the time the curtain is raised
on the winter athletic program at Rec Hall.
Biggest obstacle at the present time is the money raising question
but Blue Key president William Shade announced that by the end
of next week even this problem will be hurdled.
The eight-page IMTIPIaet will include pictures of the Penn State
campus as well as a brief outline of the College's history, a list of
.raternities and sororities and their phone numbers, sport pictures, a
list of all varsity sports, their captains and coaches.
Another step in extending hospitality to visiting athletes will be
form letters which will be sent to members of incoming teams asking
them how many members would like to be entertained by their
respective fraternities and how many would like to eat in fraternity
houses, a plan which has been sanctioned by the IFC.
The first step is always the hardest. Now that something has been
done to extend the Penn State spirit and hospitality to students of
other schools let's keep improving more and more so that we can
truly be proud of Penn State, its campus and its traditions.

TO THE EDITOR: Many of us students enter
tained our out-of-town guests and friends at the
College this past weekend. According to the "rules
and regulations" of the College, we students are
not permitted to take our guests into the College
dining commons even if they are willing to pay
for their meals. If we were allowed to bring them
to weekend meals for a reasonable charge, the
students would not be required to pay for two
meals, those meals we did not eat plus another
meal purchased in town, and the College could
use the money collected from guest tickets for
improvement of the menu.
The officials of the dining commons and the
dieticians seem to feel they are doing a good job
in meal preparation and planning. If they are con
fident in themselves and their work, surely they
will agree to permit students to bring their week
end guests to the dining commons for a reasonable
charge.
Almost every large college campus has facilities
to provide meals for guests of the students. We
are proud of our College. Let us show our. guests
and friends some warm Penn State hosp G itality.
