The index of general business in leading areas of the State, which is based on bank debits, factory payrolls, and industrial power sales and uses 1935-39 as 100. stood at 283 in September as compared to 288 in August. The figure was, however, a gain of 16 per cent over that for September, 1947. New records for September were recorded for telephones, bank debits, factory payrolls, av erage hourly earnings in manu facturing, industrial power sales, and postal receipts. Building con tracts were the largest since the 1920'5, if not at a record high. Re tail sales made a new September high and were up about 10 per cent from 1947. Automobile sales were excellent, the best in a dec ade, and exceeded even the 1941 level. Practically all of th 20 lead ing manufacturing groups and 20 leading manufacturing areas showed payroll gains over 1947, the Bureau renorted. The club grow ing from 5 members last year to 24 this year, has difficulty secur ing a room large enough to seat all its members. The only room available is in the PUB.
