Ewell yesterday took a close second place to Mel Patton of Southern California in the 200 meters dash, making the Lancas ter flash one of the top individual point-getters of the Olympics. Meanwhile, Curtis Stone pulled an upset by placing sixth in the 1.000 meters run. Stone, who was figured to be lapped in the distance event, held his own among the 11 top stars of Europe, taking a handv third >n his heat and then nlacing sixth in the best race of his life in the Onal s of the 5000. Right now, the Nittany Lion mentor is coaching the Cubans in the afternoons, after working with his own United States team in the mornings. It all started a couple of years ago when Wettstone went to Cuba over the Christmas holidays to help that countrv get off to a good start in the gvm sport. In a letter to his wife in State College, Wettstone says that the Cubans are still pretty crude and have asked him to help them make a good showing in the il.on don games. So. after working out his own team. Wettstone drills the Cubans. The Penn State mentor is pleased with the progress of his own team and has noted a steady improvement since they went into training two weeks before •ailing time. However.
