Six Lion Athletes, Coach Mark Ist
Session of Olympic Games Tomorrow
Six Penn State athletes will be among the 5,000 who open the
Olympic games at London tomorrow.
King George will launch the games tomorrow in elaborate
ceremonies at Wembley Stadium. The competition proper will get
under way Friday with 5,000 athletes from 61 nations vieing in
17 sports.
In addition to six participants, the Nittany Lions will be repre
sented in the coaching ranks by
Gene Wettstone, Penn State
gymnastic coach, who is tutoring
the United States Olympic Gym
team.

The Brooklyn Dodders rallied
for two runs in the last half of
the ninth inning to nose out the
St. Louis Cardinals. 3 to 2, at the
Dodgers’ home field.
The win boosted the Dodgers
into second place in the Na
tional league standings, five
games back of the league-leading
Boston Braves. The Cards
dropped back to third place, five
and one-half games off the pace.
The Pittsburgh Pirates hold
down the fourth spot, a half
game behind the St. Louis Car
dinals, with the New York
Giants in fifth place, a half game
behind the Pirates.
The torrid four-team fight for
the American League flag con
tinues at a hot pace. The Boston
Red Sox hold down the top spot
by a mere four percentage points
over the Philadelphia Athletics.
A game and a half behind the
league leaders, the Cleveland In
dians and the New York Yankees
are separated by a slim two per
centage points.

In the track department, three
proteges of Lion coach Chick
Werner will seek laurels.
Rated the best chance of win
ning for the United States is 30-
year-old Barney Ewell, Lion
sprinter in the early 1940’s who
equalled the world’s record in the
10 meters at 10.2 seconds in the
Olympic qualifying trials last
month.
Ewell, national 100-meters
champion, will run the 100, 200
and the sprint relays in the
Olympics.
Curtis Stone, national cham
pion at 5000 meters, will run in
that event at the Olympics, and
Herman Goffberg, another ex-
Nittany Lion, will compete at
10,000 meters as the result of his
third place in the qualifying
round at that distance.
Two members of last year’s
triple champion Penn State gym
team, Ray Sorenson and Bill
Bonsai! will represent the Lions
in the Olymnic gymnastics, in ad
dition to Louis Brodo Bordo.
