PAGE FOUR International Workshops Discuss Welfare, Travel Should American students be represented in the International Union of Students? How can foreign student relief drives be imple mented and coordinated on American campuses? What bonds of friendship can be forged between American students and the exist ing Student Unions of foreign countries? How can foreign tours be arranged for more American students? Concrete answers of practica colleges will be sought in two International Affairs Workshops. One of them will be attended by each delegate, except the special committeemen who meet con currently. An extensive international program has been undertaken by NSA, both regionally and na tionally. Negotiations with lUS, a tri-nation tour, and work as the only recognized American student organization on the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cul tural Organization, are among the intern ational accomplish ments. 1::i3 Foreign Students The Foreign Students Welfare Committee will consider several reports from regional commit tees. Swarthmore College will report on the organization and effectiveness of its Relief Drives Committee, with suggestions for their improvement. St. Joseph's College and Rit tenhouse College committees will report on various scholarship plans for 'foreign students who wish to study here and for Americans desiring to study auroad. Hospitality plans for for eigners studying in the United -,tates will be developed. The feasibility of organizing nternational houses on large campuses, or of establishing one as a regional project will be con sidered. Much groundwork needs to be accom plished before the additional tours being planned by NSA for next summer can materialize. Louis leradi of Rittenhouse College, chairman of the re gional Committee on Interna tional Correspondence, will re port on the distribution of for eign students' letters to campuses throughout the state. Many letters, written in many languages including En glis h, have been gathered by NSA's In ternational Correspondence Com mission, and sent to each region. leradi will tell of his methods of distribution to regional college students, and request suggestions for improvement. NSA sponsorship of foreign lecture series in regional colleges is another item on the agenda. The speakers would be students, instructors or non-academic lec turers with wide backgrounds of experience in foreign nations. Incensed by what he consid ered outrages against Czech stu dents, Smith demanded that the lUS Secretariat condemn the dispersal of the demonstration, the arrests and the work of the Communist action committees. The lUS conducted an investiga tion of the affair. In its defense of the action committees, the lUS was not so categorical. The Secretariat re fused to adopt any part of Smith's proposal. He and 2:llis therefore resigned. In his letter of resignation, Ellis pointed out lUS's generous help of all students suppressed by right-wing elements, and its ignoring the plight of students oppressed by Communists.
