They wer e about to hang i n effigy Lion Coach Gene Wettstone, Whom they dubbed "that hard-boiled big executive who's running the National e at Penn State but won't let our Don Perry compete in the rope climb. . .. And after the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Chi) and all the others gathered that $BOO just to fly Perry, his coach and manager to Penn State." "The foot is that the entry for, the sensational young rope-climb-1 er arrived late , " explained Watt atone, "and I turned it down on those grounds." TELEPHONE CALL BUt rtosooner had the Lion coach wired the rejection than a talepthpone call bounced back from I l es Angeles. It was Perry's coach pleading with. Wattstone to reverse his decision and set at ease the community which had great faith in Perry's rope-climb ing ability. "He told me local organizations had put up themoney to send Perry to the Nationals, and the whole ocimmtmiby was backing the entry," For Wettstone to buck the wishes of ' an entire California community and incur the wrath of citizen-backers of Perry would surely have labeled him a scoun drel in their eyes. One road lay open. The affable, understanding Lion coach accepted the entry and Venice relaxed. Wettstone's act opened the way for Perry's entry in the highly competitive rape climb event that will spark Saturday's afternoon Program in Rec Hall. RAPID CLIMBING • He has posted a mark of 4.5 seconds in .the 25-foot climb, which Wettstone says is equiva lent to at least a 3.4 in the 210- floot climb. Perry's coach believes he's capable of doing even better. AR of which makes for a ter rific rope climb contest among Perry; Elmer Huckins, Who'll rep resent Los Angele s City College and is credited with a 3.6 effort for the 20—foot climb, and the phe nomenal Garvin Smith. When these three meet Sat‘r daY. Wettstone foresees a new na tional record in the 20-foot climb. A teammate of Huckins, Smith headis the list of 12 climbers bY virtue of his almost unbelievable time of 3.4 seconds last year. Wettstone thinks the pressure of competition here may inspire him to even greate r effort. Tomorrow the Bedenkmen travel to Pittsburgh for a two game series with the Panthers. The Oaklanders will be seeking revenge fora double loss to the College nine in a series played here two weeks ago. Bob Gehrett, who edged the Jungle Cats 2-1 on two hits in his last start against them, will at tempt to duplicate his winning effort tomorrow. Gehrett was s lated to start yesterday's eon test. Daryl Calder, who limited the Lions to five hits while dropping a 2 -1 decision, is almost certain to start in one of the encounters. Jim Masticola, who captured a four-hitter against Muhlenberg last week, will probably get the nod for the Lions in the final game of the series Saturday. His opponent may be Sammy David or Southpaw Bob Lucehino, both of whom pitched in the earlier 15-8 loss to the Lions. 11-001 001 Oewe• I ow 'PLAY A SMASHING GOOD GAME WITH • . • d• ewathrk Taveftsen TENNIS NEEDS MOHAWK MODEL racket 5.98 . 9.75 . 7.95 .75 . pr. .32
