WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1948 Prospects Brighten As ... Sophomores Carry Niffany Hopes For a Successful Diamond Season Lion prospects for a winning baseball season brightened as con- ti►nued warm weather enabled the sophomore rookies, who must carry the load in the infield this season, to further demonstrate thei r wares on New Beaver Field. Outstanding among the green inner defensemen in recent prac tices were Dick Wert; fancy-fielding first baseman, and Gene Sola man at second. Although no starting lineu•p has been selected for Friday's open ing game against Dickinson Col lege at home, Wertz and Solomon, along with veteran Hal Hackman at short, and Tom Hogan at the hot corner, seem to have the in side track for the infield posi tions. QUESTION MARK The infield, despite the fine showing of the rookies, continues to be the question mark of the Lion baseballers, however. Other departments of, the dia mond team, particularly the mound staff and the outfield, ap pear more than adequate. In contrast to last season when Ken Yount was called upon, along with Bob Gehrett, to handle the great bulk of the mound chores, this year's team boasts of at least four potential starters. Captain Gehrett, tentatively slated to pitch the opener, and Sy Miller, a fast right hander, along with Bill Hill and Bill Clark have all looked good. Ed Holler continues his steady, efficient receiving behind the plate, and bulwarked by several outstanding rookies particularly Art Mengel and Bob Powell, the catching department, at this early date, gives evidence of being com pletely competent. In the outfield Don Stark is a tried arid tested fa r gardener of exceptional ability. Bedenk rates the hard-hitting Stark as a future major leaguer if he cares to pur sue the game as a career. Last season the fence-busting left field er batted a cool .389 to lead the team in hitting. POTSKLAN NITS John Potsklan has also been powdering the ball in several practice games and seems set for a big season.
