Political Shenanigans
The Daily Collegian has praised some of the outstand
ing campus leaders for their great interest in working for
better student government at Penn State. Some of these
men have selflessly devoted their time and energy to build
a second political party—the Lion party.
Our faith, however, has been shaken by the events
which transpired at the new party's clique elections held
last Sunday. It seems that some of the leaders are devot
ing more time to political shenanigans than student gov
ernment. As a result, some of the people most interested
in the development of the new party have been alienated.
The question has been raised about the democratic
procedure followed in the balloting Sunday. In order to ex
pedite the checking of names for semesters of those voting,
the grodp decided that each should sign his name on his
ballot. The method probably saved time, but it also let the
party leaders know exactly how each person voted. Because
of this situation possibly some of the voters who wished to
remain in the leaders' goad graces voted for the leaders'
choices.
In view of the close vote deciding the party clique
chairmanship the outcome of the election might have been
different if a secret ballot had been used.
Another incident which illustrates the questionable
manner in which the meeting was conducted was the vio
lation of Roberts' Rules of parliamentary procedure. One
person in the assembly made a motion to reopen nomina
tions for clique officers when the resignation of the second
nominee for senior class chairman was announced. The
motion was made in an effort to put more candidates up
for the position.
The chairman called tor a vote of the assembly, after
stating that a two-thirds majority was necessary to reopen
nominations. When it became obvious that the neceessary
two-thirds wasn't obtained, the motion was defeated.
According to Roberts' Rules, "If for any reason it is
desired to reopen nominations it may be done by a majority
vote. This motion is undebstable.”
The chairman's ruling that a two-thirds majority was
needed was not debated, despite the fact that Harold Brown,
All-College Cabinet parliamentarian was present.
Lion party leaders can restore faith in their party by
:Allowing the motion to be voted upon again at their next
Plique meeting.

And are passed on thru.

investigating the possibility of a
courtesy card plan in retail stores.
Under the plan merchants are
approached and asked if they
would be willing to give a dis
count on All purchases in their
store made by students holding
NSA courtesy cards. If enough of
the merchants agree NSA would
sell the cards to students at 75
cents each.
