Drazenovich Captures Crown
In Lions' Sole EIBA Victory
TKO's Ilgenfritz to Win in Unlimited Class;
Tighe, Benglian Upset by Underdog Cavaliers
After being crowned Eastern boxing king Saturday night, Chuck
Drazenovich, the "Brownsville Bombarder," was asked by Coach Leo
Houck to compete 1n the National tourney at Wisconsin, April 1-3.
Other Lions' names submitted to the NCAA Par approval were
Freddie Smith, Johnny Benglian and Bob Keller. Smith will compete
in the 1112-pound division; Johnny Benglian will step into the ring At
127 pounds, the weightclass in
which he won Eastern laurels
two seasons ago, and Bob Keller
in the 165-pound class. Olympic
weights and rules will be ob
served.
Drazenovich, the broad-shou:-

annexing his first boxing title.

The upset of the tourney came
in Saturday night's finals when
125-pound NCAA and EIBA
champ of a year agio, Jerry Au-
Clair, lost to Virginia's Al Hol
lingworth.
Early in the second round, Au-
Clair was cut above the left eye,
with the fight being stopped
shortly after Hollingworth, lead
ing ,n points at the time. was
awarded the crown.

Czokal Coach
Ed Czekaj, Nittany gridiron
end in 1947, has been named
line coach at Johns Hopkins
University at Baltimore, Md.
In adition to his line-coach
ing duties, Czekaj will be
swimming coach and will
teach several phys ed classes.
He will assist head football
coach Howdy Meyers.

his forehead. The decision went

rounds the Cavalier boxer nosed
out a close decision.

Maurey Nosed Out
In EIWA Finals
Penn State's lone entry in the
Eastern Intercollegiate Wr:. , .stlin,7
Tournament finals. Jim Maurey,
was defeated by defending cham
pion John Fletcher of Navy, 8-5,
in a close bout Saturday night at
Lehigh.
Coach Charlie Speidel indicated
yesterday that he is planning to
enter George Schautz. Jim Mau
rey. Laird Robertson or Bob Het
rick, and Earl Long in the Na
tionals at Lehigh this weekend.
Olympic weights and rules will
be observed.
Fletcher. picked as the tourney's
outstanding wrestler for the sec
ond straight year, scored an early
takedown on the Lion 14C
pounder, but Maurey led, 5-4, at
the end of a hectic first period.
The Navy captain picked up
two more points by reversing the
Lion ace in the second period,
and tallied a minute's time ad
vantage to win, 8-5.
Penn State tied for seventh
place in the team scoring with
Yale. by scoring 5 points. Lehign
captured the team title for the
second straight year. tallying 25
Points. Following the champions
were Franklin and Marshall. 16:
Navy. 16: Army, 15; Syracusa. 14;
and Columbia. 6. Maurey was re
sponsible for all the Lion nointa.

Two Lions
Annex Titles ,
Bill Meade and Steve Greene,
ace Lion gymnasts, captured in
dividual Eastern titles in tumb
ling and side horse, repsecptively,
in Saturday's championships at
West Point.
Meade won easily in his spec
ialty when Temple's Stout, who
was expected to offer tough
competition, did not enter the
tumbling event. The Blue and
White star was in tough form and
will be one of the principle gym
nasts who return to Coach Gene
Wettstone's fold next year.
By copping the side horse event.
Greene retained his Eastern
crown annexed last year and cli
maxed the recent dual meet sea
son in which he conquered all
opponents.
Although the meet decided in
dividual titles only, the College
was awarded the Eastern team
trophy, won in dual meet com
petition. No team scores were tal
lied in the meet.
Captain Ray Sorensen and Bill
Bonsall placed third and fourth,
respectively, in the horizontal
bar and all-around events.
Rope climbers Joe Linn, Nor
wood Lawfer and Greene finish
ed second, third and fourth in
this event with times of 4.1, 4.2
and 4.4 seconds. Winner was
Marvin Schenker of Navy who
climed the rope in 4.0 seconds.
