Lion Boxers Prep
For Orangemen
Beehive-like activity key-noted
workouts at the Blue and White
boxing ring as Coach Houck’s
ringsters prepared for Saturday’s
bouts against a well-balanced
boxing unit from Syracuse.
Lion Captain Jackie Tighe, who
again injured his nose in the West
Point tussle and had to have his
much-battered “sniffer” % -wed
with three more stitches, was
“advised” by team physician
Reid Brader not to engage in
Saturday’s meet. Despite this the
veteran 1 >he has decided to re
main _ lineup. Rec Hall fans
will wiinc s an outstanding fistic
duel when he meets Dick Prussin,
a 155-pounder who captained the
Orange two winters ago.
Coach Houck most likely will
start two aces-in-the-hole, Bob
Keller, a 175-pounder and Hal
Howard, a 165-pound slugger.
The Lions have been particularly
weak in the middleweight class
and since Pat Conlon bowed out
of the collegiate boxing picture,
the mittmen are also weak in the
175-pound class.
Keller, a semi-finalist in the re
cent intramural boxing tourney,
'has Shown plenty of ring ‘savvy’
during the last few practice ses
sions and should receive the start
ing nod as should Hal Howard, an
aggressive puncher who shows
great promise.
210-pound Chuck Drazenovich
is slated for a starting berth in
the unlimited weight class. Dur
ing last week’s sparring sessions
he demonstrated a knockout wal
lop in either hand.
Diminuative Fred Smith, a 118-
pound ring midget, will most like
ly step into the ring against Syra
cuse Captain Jerry AuClair.

handball singles tournaments

gene C. Bischoff, director of in
tramural athletics.

Hoyas
A see-saw battle in which
| neither team could gain more
„han a six-point lead was broken
up jn the last 30 seconds when
Milt Simon sank a “peep” shot to
give Penn State a 42-40 decision
over Georgetown University Wed
nesday night on the Hoyas’ court.
Although the Lawthermen have
not been able to wan more than
two games in succession this year,
they will try to break this jinx
when they entertain the riepauw
Tigers in Rec Hall at 8:30 o’clock
Saturday.
Starting slowly, the Lions were
unable to cope with the George
town style of play, and a, ter a lew
minutes found themselves trail
ing the Washington team by seven
points. Suddenly the cagers came
roaring back, and with Jack Biery
leading the attack, overcame the
deficit and went ahead 21-19.
In the second half the team
slowly pulled away from the
Hoyas but as the clock hand drew
close to the zero mark, Geo-ge
town again found the range and
closed the gap between the teams.
Back and forth the battle raged
with the lead changing hands
three times.
Finally, with less than a min
ute to go. Jackie Biery tied the
count with a field goal. At this
point in the contest Simon marked
up the vital two points, that car
ried Coach Lawtlier’s team to its
seventh win in thirteen starts.
