WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY M, 1048 Cagers Invade Washington For Georgetown Skirmish The ambitious Georgetown Hoyas, having won ten out of the twenty games played so far this season, will attempt to move up from the halfway mark tonight when they entertain the Nittany Lions in the National Guard Armory at Washington, D. C. Playing a twenty seven game schedule, the Hoyas were smacked down time after time in their recent disastrous tour of the Mid-West and South. With a smaller but eaually dif ficult schedule, the Lawthenmen have also won half of the contests played so far this season, and both teams will be trying to com plete their schedules on the black side of the ledger. Although the stellar Andy Kostecka was dismissed from the squad for insubordination, the Georgetown team can rely on Danny Kraus. All - American guard for the last two years, to provide the spark in the team, SEASON RECORD Georgetown started the season this year with a red hot record of six straight wins, but the long road trip smashed their percent age down to .500 as they were handed six straight losses. The most important of these were the 30-45 decision to Santa Clara and a 89-77 topping by Notre Dame. Returning home, the Hoyas took Maryland 52-*l0: this, however, was offset bs losses to Canisius and LaSalle. After upsetting Texas Wesleyan 48-37. the Wash ington team slipped badly and was swamped 51-70 by Holy Cross and 36-87 by North Carolina State. Coach Larwther will start the same team that took the floor in the Syracuse game to try to boost the squad’s record on foreign floors. So far this year, the cagers have triumphed only twice in the six games played away from home. Whitey McKown and John Kulp are slated for the guard posts. Terry Ruhlman is listed for. the center spot, and Jack Biery and Milt Simon will handle the for ward positions. INTRODUCING... TODAY! Almost everyone on campus knows that the Penn State team derived its name from the large mountain lions that roamed the surrounding hills, but very few know how the Washington. D. C., team was given the strange name of Hoya. According to the “Dictionary of Nicknames,” some years ago the Georgetown rooters used a cheer containing the Greek words Hova Saxa, meaning hard as a rock. The rest of the cheer dissolved with time and just the Hoya re mained to give the team its pseu donym. Perhaps the oldest nickname of our hoop rivals is the trade mark of the West Virginia squad. Although most people think that the Temple Owl is used to signify wisdom, the reason that the col lege decided to adopt the Owl as its “nom-de-plume” is that, “very few schools use this appellation.” The last bison in the East lived in the vicinity of Lewisburg; the Bucknell athletic teams adopted the animal for its standard.
