Swimmers, Fencers Open
Home Seasons Tomorrow
Tankmen Face Orange
Coach Bill Gutteron’s tankmen
will attempt to break into the
win column when they inaugur
ate their home season against
Syracuse at the Glennland Pool,
2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
After their initial 40-35 loss to
Franklin and Marshall, the Penn
State swimmers have been work
ing hard to overcome the short
comings of their first encounter.
WEAKNESSES
The weak spots which Gut
teron noted in the meet with the
Diplomats were pacing, turns,
backstroke and breast stroke
“ All this is attributable to lack
of competitive experience. Es
pecial emphasis has been placed
on these points during training
for the Syracuse meet,” stated
the coach.
The starters for tomorrow’s
meet have not a n definitely been
assigned as yet. The 300 yard
medley relay team, consisting of
a back stroker, breast stroker.
and a free style swimmer, has
not been chosen.
GUTTERON’S CHOICES
Hughes and Wallace, Gutter
on’s choices in the F & M meet,
will swim the 300 yard free
style, and McGrory and Peck
will again compete in tee 50-
yard dash.
Cal Folmsbee, who finished
first in the fancy diving event,
will again lead the divers against
Syracuse, while number two
man, Mike Kutsenkow, who is
currently recovering from a ton-

Penn State’s fencing team op
poses Temple University in Rec
Hall at 4 o’clock to-morrow after
noon in its opening home meet.
The match will follow tihe Laon-
Syracuse wrestling match.
Against West Point, the Blue
and White team bowed 15-12. De
spite the loss, Coach Arthur Meyer
feels that the team did well, since
this was the first college match for
many on the Blue and White team.
Coach Meyer pointed out that
with experience the team’s show
ing will improve. However, cap
tain-elect John MacCreary will be
unable to participate in future
matches due to his recent gradu
ation. Another captain will prob
ably be elected before the Tem
ple match.

Sure starters in the 400-yard
relay are McGrory, Peck and
Schilmacher. The fourth merrfber
of the rela team will be chosen
from Eble, Hill. Frazier, Hughes,
Lord, Tenzer. Wasaut and White.
Vacation Summaries
BASKETBALL: When a motor
loses a sparkplug it slows down,
arid the loss of a play-maker had
the same effect on the Penn State
basketball team as it dropped
three straight games during the
vacation, each by a greater
margin.
For three quarters of the Buck
nell game, played January 21. the
Lions matched the Bisons point
for point. Then, in the last quar
ter. Milt Simon received a broken
nose and the Lewisburg squad
took advantage of this to swamp

years that the Bisons scored a
double win over Penn State.
One week later, the Pitt Pan
thers outscored the Lawthermen
42-34 at Rec Hall. Without Simon

the much improved Pittsburgh
auintet. even though John Kulp
poured 15 points through the
hoop.
Still shaken from those two de
feats. the Penn State Lion went
to Morgantown Wednesday onlv
to be battered down 60-32 for the
worst drubbing handed to Penn
State this year. A West Virginia
team, anxious for revenge, jumped
