PAGE SIX Dr. Perrine Demonstrating Microwaves Perrine To Discuss Dr. 'Radar and Microwaves' "Radar and Microwaves" will be the subject of a lecture-dem onstration by Dr. James 0. Perrine, assistant vice-president of the American Telephone and Telegraph company, in Schwab auditorium at 8 o'clock tonight. Preceding the lecture, a dinner will be held in the Maple Room at 6:30 p.m. for all who have tickets. Seats for those attending the dinner will be reserved in the auditorium. At 6 p.m. an informal social meeting for those wishing to meet Dr. Perrine is scheduled in the Home Economics building. At the lecture Dr. Perrine will discuss and de . monstrate the fundamental phenomena associa ted with electric wave propaga tion. Beginning with visible me chanical waves in a rope, he will develop the basic concepts of wave motion and then extend these ideas to electrical wire systems. Dr. Perrine also will produce microwaves of the type used in radar and will demonstrate their physical properties, including the transmission of speech and music over a beam of such waves. The lecture is sponsored by the local chapters of the Society of the Sigma Xi, Sigma Pi Sigma, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Quarterly Magazine Sponsors Essay Contest The "Humanist." a quarterly magazine, is sponsoring an essay contest open to college students. The subject is "Building a Posi tive Way of Life in accordance with the Scientific Method and the Highest Aspirations of Man kind." Essays may be written by in dividuals or by groups of five or more students, according to the magazine rules. The desired length is between 1000 and 1400 words. First prize is $25.; second prize, $lO. Manuscripts, which will not be returned, must be postmarked no later than December 20, 1947, to be eligible. "All club members and independent men interested in joining the club are eligible to play," said Stefanko. "Players should sign the list on the club room bulletin board in Old Main." Plans were discussed for the All-College talent show to be held December 5. Final arrangements for the show will be made next week by club members. Engineering Student Wins Bulova Watch On Quiz Program Thomas Turnbull, junior in electrical engineering, who inter rupted his schooling this semes ter to go to the Aspinwall Vet erans Hospital, recently won a 17-jewel Bulova watch on a quiz program at the hospital. Turnbull served with the-Navy aboard the destroyer, Ruben James, which was torpedoed be fore the U.S. entered the war. He was in the waters of the North Atlantic many hours before being picked up as a result of the tor pedoing. In a recent quiz program con ducted by Professor Quiz, Turn bull put his college training to profitable use and walked off with the first prize, a 17-jewel Bulova wrist watch.
