PAGE FOUR Avenging Lions Battle Undefeated West Virginia The Nittany Lions returned to their winning ways with an easy 32-7 victory over the Mountaineers in 1943, but in '44 former All- American Ira Rodgers came up with a West Virginia team which scored a stunning 28-27 upset victory over the Lions on New Beaver Field. Jimmy Walthall, of West Virginia, and Johnny Chuckran, of Penn State, were the heroes of the '44 clash. Walthall, fleet halfback, enjoyed the edge on Chuckran in the passing department, although the Penn State ball-carrier ran wild on the ground. This year both boys have been plagued by injuries. A torn liga ment has handicapped Walthall so far this season, although he has played in a few of the games. Chuckran has been bothered by a bad case of "shin splints" and will not be able to play. Tomorrow's game, the first be tween these two teams since 1944. will find Bill Kern, Mountaineer mentor in a new rove. Heretofore a strong disciple of the single wing. the West Virginia coach has switched to the T and has enjoyed unusual success with it. LION SINGLE WING Both West Virginia and Penn State boast big tough lines and a fast set of backs. Walthall, Tom Keane. Pete Zinaich, Rex Bum gardner ad Jimmy Devonshire are some of the better-known names in the Mountaineer back field, while Kern can look for ward to such hard-charging standouts as Gene Corum. Ed Kulakowski and center Leo Ben jamin on the line. FORMER BUCKEYE Keane. who generalled Ohio State's high flying Buckeye's three years ago, is one of Kern's best back quarterbacks, and op erating from the T is right down his alley. The 180-pound gridder is a crack passer and a shifty runner. "Outside of Navy's Dick Scott. Leo Benjamin the best center we will encounter this season," said Al Michaels, Lion backfield coach who scouted the West Vir ginia team. Higgins and Kern are intimate friends off the field, but for the duration of a football game in which their two teams are in volved, there'e no love lost be tween the two. Although great nals. both would like nothing better than to beat the other.. This Kern's eighth year at the Mountaineer helm and he and Higgins have oposed each other only three times. Higgins holds the edge with two wins, but that lone defeat in 1942 spoiled what might have been the first un beaten season of the Higgins' re gime. Kern went to war at sea eon's end.. 14TH ENCOUNTER Saturday's game wil bring Penn State and West Virginia together for the 14th time since 1904. Penn State holds the edge in the series with eight victories to four for the Mountaineers. The odd game was the only stalemate in the series. West Virginia's squad of 34 wil arrive this afternoon, and will go through a light workout on New Beaver Field. Back in the Penn State lineup will probakly be Larry Joe. Nit tany Valley's speedster of the gridiron, after almost two weeks' rest. Bobby Williams' steadiness Plus Elwood Petchel's versatility and exceptional passing should strengthen the hole made by the loss of ColonP. Jeff Durkiata, who leads the team in scoring. and Wally Trip lett are winwbacks who have been helping make the headlines for Penn State. PENN STATE LINE Back in the line after sitting it out last Saturday will be co captain end Johnny Potsklan. A line boasting the weight and ability of such other standouts as co-captain Johnny Nolan. Steve Suhey. Johnny Wolosky, Norton, Drazenovich. and Tamburo on the other end, should make a com bination hard for the Mountain eers to crack. For the two coaches, Bob Hig gins of Penn State and Bill Kern of West Virginia, the game will mark the renewal of an old riv alry. Kern last led the Mountain eers against the Lions in 1942. Jay Vee Booters Drop Inaugural The Lion's newly formed Jay vee soccer team opened its sea son at the Bloomsburg State Teachers College by dropping a close 3-2 decision in a hotly fought contest. Although Bloomsburg drew first blood on a goal by Dent, Sam Axe, playing center half for the Lions, retaliated with two goals putting the visitors ahead 2-1 at the close of the period. Neither team could score in the second quarter and the Lions held a 2-1 lead when the whistle blew ending the half. The third period was hard I fought with the Lions repeatedly thwarted at the Bloomsburg goal but they were unable to score. In the final quarter the Blooms burg forward line began to click and two quick goals by Dent and Ludwig gave Bloomsburg a 3-2 lead. They held on to that lead to win the game by a 3-2 count. ,S ) trictlyl rte! / i t -groin 1:;7 at HENRY'S PARADISE CAFE 114 S.
