With the Editor
Last semester Collegian demanded that the hat
societies justify their existence or disband. New
members were urged to reinitiate programs of
service to the College and the student body.
The members of the black-hat honoraries are.
tapped supposedly because they are outstanding
male students on campus. They accept the invita
tion to join because of the honor and recognition
which are granted for outstanding contributions to
the welfare of Penn State.
If these attributes as prerequisites for mem
bership are still enforced, then by their very
nature and composition, these societies are

Confused.

capable of performing a great many services to
Penn Slate.
Collegian suggested a number of programs of
action which are well within the scope of the hon
oraries. One of them was the important service of
conducting pep rallies and organizing cheering sec
tions particularly for football games.
Realizing the importance of making their soci
eties working organizations, the presidents of the
four leading hat groups have called a mass meeting
of all members tonight.
Tonight's meeting will be a significant in
dication of the importance of maintaining hat
societies at Penn State.
Pon Pals Wanted
TO THE EDITOR: After having established an
International Correspondence Bureau, I--on behalf
of members on my waiting list—take leave to ap
ply to you. May I request to put me in touch with
readers of your paper interested in friendly cor
respondence?
Having been secluded from the outside world
these longyears, and yearning for a real demo
cratic enlightenment and a personal contact from
man to man across borders, my members would
only too gladly welcome and answer letters from
abroad. Most of my members . . . have a fairly
good knowledge of English, but would also be
pleased to write in German, if desired. I am sure
my members will try and give their pen-friends
every satisfaction.
Individuals and groups of persons may communi
cate with me direct stating their particulars and
interests. All letters will be attended to and all
applications linked up. If possible, two or three re
ply coupons should be enclosed to cover expenses,
and also—to save time—an introductory letter to
future pen-friends over here will be appreciated.
Pen-friendships are a step toward the creation of
that international friendship and goodwill that is
so essential to understanding and peace, don't you
think so?
Yours hopefully.

An Invitation
Collegian wishes to extend an invitation to its
readers . to contribute to the Letters To The Editors
department, a regular feature of our editorial page.
In accordance with the policy which was set
down when the Collegian resumed its daily stand
ing a year ago, all letters will be given the same
prominence as the editorials written by staff mem
bers.
Your letters will be printed just as they are
written provided they contain • nothing of a
libelous nature. We reserve the right to refrain
from printing any letter which is not signed
by the writer; however. it is not necessary to
print the name if the writer requests that it be
withheld.
The Collegian considers this column as the best
method of making the paper more representative.
Last year hundreds of letters from our readers
were printed. Not all of them were complimentaty;
some took the form of complaints, gripes, sugges
tions, and others proved extremely informative.
All letters should be addressed to The Editor,
Daily Collegian, P. 0. Box 261. or left at the
Collegian Offices, Carnegie Hall.—LGF
Editorials and features in The Daily Col
legian reflect the opinions of the writer. They
make no claim to represent student or College
opinion. All unsigned editorials are by the
editor.
