Jeffrey Booters Point for Clean Slate This Season
Fourteen experienced Looters
will return to Bill Jeffrey's 1941
Lion soccer team. and If the vet
eran mentor's expectations are
gratified. the Nittany soccermen
will garner their first undefeated
record since 1940.
With the season's opener against
Bucknell less than a week away,
Jeffrey has increased the tempo
of drills for his 30-man squad. A
formidable array of opponents
faces the Lion eleven during the
coming year. but with exper
ienced talent deep in every posi
tion. Coach Bill views the future
with cautious optimism.
Chief mos upon which the
"Smiling Scot" is pinning his
hopes are All-Americans Gene
Graebner and Dean Hartman on
defense, and Ken Hosterman, Bill
Shellenberger. and Dean Witmer
on offense.
EXPERIENCED BACKFIELDERS
Graebner. a first-stringer last
season, will find relief at his
goalie post from experienced
shot-thwarters Jim Doman of Lan
caster and Ed Watson of State
College.

FALL SPORTS CALENDAR
Listing intercollegiate competition in football. soccer, and
cross-country. the Penn State Fall sports schedule shows 27 ath
letic contests for Lion teams at home and away. Returning to the
campus following a wartime inactivity, junior varsity football will
present a four-game schedule, engaging a quartet of schools whose
varsity elevens are scheduled by the Higginsmen.
The annual homecoming date is October 18. with Syracuse
supplying the opposition on New Beaver Field. Fall houseparty
dates will be entertained the following weekend with West Vir
ginia footballers. Navy's soccer team, and the cross-country bar
riers of Cornell.
The Nittany cross-country team, traditionally one of the finest
in the land: will have only one opportunity to display its wares in
State College. East Lansing, Michigan, will twice be the target of
the Wernerrnen, with a dual meet with the Michigan State Spar
tans. and the annual national collegiate' centered there.

Despite the loss of last Year's
captain and All-American, Johnny
Hamilton.' in the forward wall,
Coach Jeffrey is confident of a
strong Lion attack.

scorer. Ken Hosterman. the Nit
tany offensive will boast such ex

cer coach. Bill Jeffrey is the
holder of a soccer record that has
never been surpassed in collegiate
annals. During his 21-year tenure
at Penn State. Jeffrey's boaters
have posted a won-lost percent
age of .817.
Between 1926 and 1946, the
Lion squad in league competition
played a total of 118 games. win
ning 84. losing 15. and tying 19.
During the same Period the States
men narticivated in 30 non-league
tussles. winning 26. losing 1. and
trine 3.
The average score per game of
the Jeftfreymen is 3,3 goals to the
opponents' .78.
From November 5. 1932. until
November 15. 1941. the soocermen
had a string of 65 consecutive
games without
