Lion Nine Meets Green Tenors
Alter Blanking Bucknell 2-0
. Following Wednesday’s 2-0 shut
out over Bucknell, Coach Joe
Bedenk will send Ken Yount to
the mound at New Beaver Field,
as the Lions meet Western Mary
land ait 4 o’clock today.
The second game of the series
will toe, played at 2:30 o’clock to
morrow with Bob Gehrett as the
Lions’ starting hurler. The Green
Tenors have won four out of
seven games.
Gehrett pitched the Bedenkmen
to their second straight shutout
over Bucknell Wednesday after
noon and set the Bisons d9wn
with three hits. Eddie Sebastien
elli’s single with the bases loaded
in the ninth inning pushed across
the winning runs, as Penn State
won 2-0.
NAILED AT PLATE
The Bisons got to Gehrett for
two hits in the first inning, but
Johnny Potsklan’s fine throw from
centerfield to catcher Ed Holler at
the plate out off the Bucknell
rally.
Pitching one of the best games
of his career. Gehrett didn’t give
the Bisons another hit until short
stop Halter singled in the ninth.

In Colgate, Hobart Contests
Riding high on the crest of a three-game winning streak, and
fresh from a week of claw-sharpening under the tutelage. of Coach
Nick Thiel, a 19-man Lion lacross e squad opens a two-game New
York stand when it faces-off with the Red Raiders of Colgate at 4
o’clock this afternoon.
Coached by Mark Randall, former director of military education
at Hamilton College, the Colgate stickmen last met th e Nittany
laicrossers in 1940 when they
whipped the Lions 'by hn 11-3

On Saturday, the Thielmen
journey to Geneva for their sec
ond weekend encounter with Ho
bart College. Hoping for a repeat
performance of their 14-6 win
over Hoioart in 1046, the Lions
will have to be at full strength to
down “Babe” Krause’s potent
stick-wielders.
Boasting a pair of, 200-pound
defensemen in Bob and “Tiny”
Williamson, the Hobart perform
ers have garnered five wins and
two losses in competition this
season.

When the Penn State tennis
team faces the Colgate University
squad at Hamilton, N. Y., Satur
day, all eyes will be focused on
the day’s feature match when Lion
Captain Walt Stenger pairs off
against Captain Frank Warren of
the Red Raiders.
In this second engagement be
tween the two, the Blue and White
number one man will be seeking
revenge from last week’s grueling
match when he lost to Warren,
7-5, 3-6, 15-13.
The Nittany netters departed
yesterday for upper New York
Stato where Friday they will en
counter Syracuse and Saturday.

The Orangemen from Syracuse
were recently - dealt an 8-1 defeat
by Colgate, and Coach Sherman
Fogg of the Nittany Lions' points
toward the Syracuse matcth as a

team to record its initial win.

In Championships
Fresh from their victory in . the
Group 111 playoffs in Ithaca last
week, Penh State’s golf .squad
yesterday afternoon journeyed to
Atlantic City for the EIGA finals
this weekend.
For the championship matches,
Coach Rutherford has chosen the
same squad which downed Cor
nell, Army, and Pitt in the group
playoffs last weekend.
This team includes Harper and
Smith, Klein and Hart, -and
Noble and Hack; with Dave See
as alternate.
The Nittany linksmen will meet
Princeton, Group II champs, on
Saturday morning. The winner
of this pnatch will encounter the
winner of the Brown-Navy tilt
for the EIGA championship, in
the afternoon. The loser of this
match is • automatically awarded
second place.

Karver Takes a Rest as...
Three Nittany Trackmen
Out for Colgate Meet
Penn State’s track team journeys to Colgate tomorrow seeking its
second, win, while three Nittany Lion standouts stay at home.
Gerry Karver, IC-4A champion and outstanding college miler in
the nation, will nc/t make the trip, nor will half-miler Bill Shuman
and sprinter Mitch Williams.
Karver, who will run the Coliseum Mile at Los Angeles next
week against the cream of the country’s nailers, will tak p a rest tins
weekend
The Nittany Lion star ran a
4:111.6, the top college mile in five
years, to nose out Jack Dianetti of
Michigan Statp last week.
Shuman aggravated a foot in
jury last week, awcl Williams sus
tained a pulled tendon against
Michigan State.

while the rest of the team is in
active, so Lion coach Ohick Wer
