Fireside Chats
TO THE EDITOR: A numbe,. of month s ago an
editorial appeared' in Collegian which was con
cerned with the formation some instrument
through which students and faculty might become
better acquainted oultside the classroom and air
=Will interests and problems.
Since then, there has seemed to be an under
current of feeling along this line which has
broken out once in la while,
Before the War the PSCA took the initiative. in
forming a student -faculty relations committee. 'The
resultS of those meetings are on file. Perhaps the
CommEttee ougbit to be re-netiviated.
There was 'anothe r sutcessful program before the
War Called "Eireside-SessAons" in which a member.
of the, faculty or adminiStration would be selected
from a prepared list by a fraternity, sorority, or
independent group to invite to dinner.
After dinner the guest would speak briefly
and informally on a subject also selected mu
tually ahead of time and then a bull session
ensued. •• _ .
_ .
, , .
The sessicn s wer . e lirntted to:an hbur, but could
go on to a later tithe if desired.
Again Fireside Sesslions are beiriir instituted,
They \vill run from March 3 throu,gh the 23ird.
One hundred and seven living ithits have been
informed threUgh their• officers about the program
and a list of 48 available administrative and faculty
personnel together with seleated tcpics has been
sent to these same units.
hours have been cpent in the organizing of this
program and quite a little postage, bu•t very few
sorority, fraternity or independent groups have
sty c w, any interest by dheeking their lists and
sending them back.
In fact, to date fou r fraternities and four
independent units have answered that they
would like , to invite certain faculty or admin
istrative .personnel to their igroups, and five of
this group have actually.plannfid ra total of 16
sessions in the three 7 week - period ..the sessions
are running.
The list cr prefeFeors is cf. higlhest quality and

an easy one. The •dePantmenlt - responsible for such

• I doubt very mudh whether it. was with foresight
that those respells:Dile prepared the Western Pol_
lock Road parking lot for the capacity crowd of
auitomcibile§ that • was certainly:expected to—and
did—arrive. .
Leaving the lot was somewhat' difiNoult. The
i.vesttern approach from 322, deceptively clear, re
sembled a farmer's lane atter a three-day blizzard
with iihree feet of snow.
The random
_parking of autos conspicuously
indicated the a.hsence 7 of the Car'npus Patrol,
but \ wh'o assisted ably lin removing the last ear

Commendation, and ndt criticism, is dile them. I
just happened to be stuck in the wrong place and at
the wrong time.
