charged the government with
breach cf its coal contract. He's
asked for •a re-opening of the
whole wage and hour question,
and implies that unless the -gov
ernment signs a new contract, coal
miners may walk out November
20th in a paralyzing new coal
strike. The government seized the
coal mines and has been operating
them ever since the big strike last

In Farm'Series 'Program
A radio program, featuring
Penn State; will be broadcaSt each
morning this week at 6:45 o'clock
over • radio station WEAF, New
York.
William B. Connell, professor of
animal husbandry extension, be
gan the series this morning with a
discussion, "Steaks Hang High,"
and tomorrow' s 'program will fea
ture Elton B. Tait, assistant agri
cultural: extension representative,
discussing horse-pulling contests.
Other persons appearing on the
program thi s week will be Dean
Lyman E. Jackson, of the School
of Agrkulture; Floyd E: Rose, his
wife, Eleanor, and son, Floyd, Jr.,
all of Windcrest; Paul. H. Margolf,.
professor •of poultry husbandry,
and Henry V. Heist, professor of
agricultural e conomics extension.

Steidle Returns
From U.S. Mission
Dean Edward Steidle arrived in
the States Saturday Morning after
a 26-hour trip by plane from Bra
zil, where he served as -the De
partment of State's chairman of
the Commission on Minerallndus
try Education to th e second Fan_
American Congress on Mining En
gineering.and Geology.
Steidle was elected vice presi
dent of the Congress representing
North America. . .
The Congress, which was held at
Petropolis, summer capitol of Bra
zil; lasted from Oct. 1 to 15. It in
cluded a week's trip by plane into
the interio r of Brazil to inspect
diamond fields, mica, bauxite, iron
and manganese mines as- well as
the deepest.,gold mine in the, world
and the National School of Mines
of Brazil at Auro Preto.
During th e exercises which the
Congress attended in celebration
of the 70th anniversary of• the Na
tional . School of Mining, Dean
Steidle mad e an address outlining
the modern conception of .mineral
industry,- education based on en
ergetic discovery, maximum re
covery and minimum waste of
mineral resources.
The president' of Brazil attended
the formal opening of the Con
gress, the dean revealed. Among
the delegates were professors of
mining and geology from Brazil,
U. S., Canada, the Argentine,
Chile, Peru and Bolivia. • •
The dean was accompanied by
Mrs. Steidle on the trip, his sixth
to South America. They stayed at
the—Quitandinha Hotel, the finest
in Latin America.
,All together,
Dean Steidle ha s traveled 70,000
miles by plane in the western
hemisphere, having attended the
first' Congress in 1942 and another
in 1944, when he represented the
Inte r - American Development
Commission under the Co-Ordina
tor of Inter-American Affairs.
. "Solidarity of the western hem
isphere is the greatest contribution
we can make to the world," Dean
Steidle declared.

Begin in Armory
Polls Open Two Days;
Voters Use Rear Door
Student politicos face the test
today as balloting for All-College
and class officers begins in the
mory at 9 o'clock this morn
ing.
The polls will be open until 5
o'clock today and will reopen to:
morrow for the same hours. Vot
ers have been asked by Jack
Branigan, All-College Elections
chairman, to use the rear door as
the front entrance is restricted to
Naval personnel.
In addition to All-College and
class officers, male students will
also chociTe a,presidep.tand,secre
tary fdr. the Athletic Association.
William "Red" Moore, football
captain, and Curt Stone, cress
country captain, are the candidat
es . foe president while Dave
Hornstein and - Bronco Kosono
vich will contest the secretary
race.
The Elections Code, as approved
by All -College Cabinet last
Spring, prohibits any election
eering in Old Main- as well as the
Armory. Also on the taboo list is
the use of cars on campus for
campaigning purposes.

Druids Elect
Druids, sophomore athletic hon
orary, recently elected William
Bonsall president. Michael Beckett
was named vice-president and
John Musser secretary.
Honorary Reorganizes
All former member s of Scab
bard and Blade, honorary military
fraternity, are requested to report
to Captain Yount, 101 Carnegie
Hall, at their convenience. The
fraternity will be reactivated by
the military department.
Outing Club
Outing Club .elected the follow
ing_ officers at last week's meet
ing: Jean Wilcox, president; Jean
Terry, vice president; Phyllis
Smith, secretary; and Virginia
Wilson, treasurer. Plans, including
a hike tip Mt. Nittany, have been
laid for the semester, but mem
berghip is still open to those in
terested. Miss Barbara Knoll is
the adviser.
FFA Elects
Kenneth • Stayer was elected
president of the Penn State chap
ter of the F.F.A. at a meeting this
week. Other officers include
Dewey Brumbaugh, vice-presi
dent; William- Hinebaugh, secre
tary; Elmer Sealover, treasurer;
William Robinson, reporter; and
Chester Lathrop, sentinel.
Russell B. Dickerson, professor
of agricultural education, will be
faculty representative. Three rep
resentatives who will attend the
Agriculture Student Council are
the president, Rudolph Brannaka
and Robert Drick.
Meetings will be held the second,
Monday of each month.
