Thi s week, Coach Chick Werner
and his varsity cross-icountry team
round out their preliminary
toughening-up program, and he - ad
for Syracuse for the first meet
of the season on Saturday.
Howie Horne, member of the
1942 National championship team,
was named yesterday by Werner
to act..as team captain against the
Orangemen. In addition to Horne,
Jerry. Karver, . freshman inter
collegiate champion and one-time
state champion in the P. I. A. A.
mile and cross-country, Curt
Stone, Bernie Rudnick and Don
Longenecker will make
. the trip.
Coach Werner will not name the
final team until just before meet
time.
• Monday, the varsity hill-and
dalers worked oilt'on the Centre
Hills Country Club grounds to giv e
the runners the feel of a hilly
course such as Syracuse offers.
Grief at Syracuse
Neither Syracuse nor the Lions
have had a cross-country team
since 1942. For that reason both
squads will be unknown quanti
ties until after Saturday's contest.
And Chick Werner isn't expecting
an easy time of it either, because
the Orange coach is Bob Grieve,
who formerly assisted Werner
with the Nittany Lions.
Tink Candy, one of .the most
promising runners on th e squad,
according to the LiOn coach, was
lost to the. team for several days
last week because of a leg injury.
Candy, however, is.bck with the
squad now althOugh he• will not

"Biggie" Munn, in his first year
as Syracuse head coach after eight
years as Michigan's line coach, ha s
as his backfield coach Forest Eva

blacker on the Michigan elevens
that starred Tom Harmon. Munn
and his assistants have •theveloped
an offensive which operates from
a T-formation and then winds up
in a single wing thrust.
Watt a Backfield Threat
The chief Syracuse backfield
threats are Joe Watt, Eddie Dolan,
Walter "Slivers" Slovenski, and
Captain Dick 'Whitesell with
triple-threat Larry Ellis operating
in the quartetiback s pot. Watt,
Whitesell, and Ellis played on the
1942 Orange eleven that lost to th e
Lions by an 18 to 13 score.
The Orange line,
,although very
heavy, lacks experience and is
short on replacements. It was this
lack of replacements that enabled
a lighter Dartmouth eleven to
overcom e Syracuse last S'aturday
by •a 20 to 14 count.
At the end s will be Paul McKee
who grabbed Johnny Marrdarino's
pass to . score against Dartrnouth,
and Doc Aicocella who played! in
last year's East-West game. Jack
Kerchman, who played tackle for
the Army All-Stars in the China
Bowl game last year, is the only
other experienced , lineman.
