Sandwich Shop Opens
For Summer Session;
New "Coke" Machine
One of Penn State's traditional
institutions has returned to opera
tion after• a three year interrup
tion of serving the armed forces,
but only for the m'ain Summer
Session.
The Sandwich Shop, located in
the basement of Old Main, is once
more open to the public, serving
breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and
as a place for class-weary students
to spend their sandwich hours.
Under the supervision of Miss
Hazel G. Fall, the Sandwich Shop
offers complete cafeteria - style
meals at reasonable prices.
In September 1942, when coeds
took over the tri-dorms, the sand
-with shop was converted into a
mess hall for these students, be
cause of the lack of dining com
mons to accommodate the exten
sive enrollment of coeds, Curtiss-
Wright cadettes, and Hamilton
Standard Propeller trainees.
When the Navy V-12 program
was changed to Naval ROTC at
the College, the Sandwich Shop
converted to serving meals to en
listed me n and carried through
until the end of last semester,
when the final group of trainees
left campus. Still to be noted in
the cafeteria are the six-compart
ment trays and G.I. cups.
Now, the Sandwich Shop, with
a new coat of paint and a Navy
serving counter, is back to pre-war
status for the remainder of the
Summer Session, with mid-morn
ing and mid-afternoon snack s and
!`cokes" always available, as well
as regular meals.
One of the new features of the
recently reopened eatery is the
sort drink dispenser which auto-
Matically returns correct change.

THE SUMMER COLLEGIAN
ormer Chaplain
JOHN H. FRIZZELL
(Continued from page one)
. .
tary !of the Brotherhood of St.
Andrew in the Episcopal Church.
Frizzell returned to Penn State
in 1926 as associate professor-of
public s'peaking,_ and organized
the work in speech and debating
into what is now the department
of speech.
Frizzell became College chap
lain quite by accident, too. In the
Spring of 1928, College officials
found themselves without a
chaplain to offer the invocation
for commencement. They asked
Frizzell.
"I. had never.written a prayer,"
Frizzell, who since that time has
written and published a book of
prayers,. said. "But I prayed, to,
for, and with the graduating.sen
iors instead of telling God all that
had happened in the Common
wealth during the past year."
Frizzell was appointed to the
chapel list and in the Fall of
1928 found himiFelf acting col
lege chaplain. Nine years ater,
when someone raised the ques
tion in a letter as to how long
one should be an acting chaplain
before he became a •chaplain, he
was appointed College chaplain,
which position he held until his
retirement.
Frizzell was the founder . of the
local chapter of his fraternity,
Phi Kappa Psi, and during World
War H, his home !really became
the house for his fraternity.
In tribute to Frizzell for his
interest and service to the . +chap
ter, the fraternity has presented
him with a leather-bound volume
containing letters from 121 mem
bers of the chapter. The cover is
inscribed with the words, "John
Henry." A sizeable money gift in
the form of an annuity accom
panied the Volume. .
