Stick-Wielders. Trim New Yorkers
To Bring Season's Wins to Six
Winning two games, a 6-3 victory over Syracuse, and a
7-3 trimming of - Cornell, gave the Nittany lacrossemen a
clean sweep of their first post-war trip into New York State.
•Coach Nick Thiel's Penn Staters are on the way to their
best season since 1938, winning six and losing three so far
thiS year, with one game, a return match with- Cornell June 8,
still to be played.
SYRACUSE
Nick Thiel guided his lacrosse
men to their fifth win of the sea
son as they defeated his old coach,
Roy Simmons of Syracuse, on Fri
day. Thiel was an All-American
attackmau under Simmons in his
undergraduate days.
Rough Game!
The State stick-wielders shut
out the Orange in the first half of
a rough, slashing contest which
looked more like a football game
than a lacrosse matth.
John Nolan was outstanding at
his midfield post for the Lions,
getting two goals, an assist on an
other, and turning in a fine field
performance.
Attackmen Ken Kerwin and
Howdy Taylor, and centerfielders
Ernie Baer and George Locotos,
accounted for one• goal apiece.
The Friday game. saw Mery
"Indian" Snyder, getting the first
starting nod from Coach Thiel
since he was injured in the open
ing lacrosse tilt with Army. He
was benched in the third period
because of a leg injury. Also in
jured was midfielder Fred Pais
son, whose shoulder locked out
of place in the same period.
Nolan Scores
After a scoreless first quarter,
Nolan tallied the game's first
counter unassisted .with ten sec
onds of the second period gone
ind'lGeorge Locotos scored anoth
err,for. State five minutes later.
;'• ;hie' Lions . made the .count 5-0
by` `slamming in three goals in the
; '..first three minutes of the second
half against the big Orange team
which averaged 185 pounds per
man.

CORNELL
Howdy Taylor, fast Lion inside
attackman, copped the scoring
honors as the State stick-wielders
clipped the 'Big Red lacrossers
Saturday for their sixth victory of
the season.•
Left-hander Taylor shot the
first two Lion goals past the .
Ithaca netman early in the op
ening quarter. He was put out
of action in the third period
when he collided with a - Cornell
defenseman and suffered a
shoulder injury that may keep
him sidelined for the final tilt
with the Big Red.
Both of Taylor's teammates in
the inside attack scored. Cliff
Sullivan racked up one In fhk. op
ening quarter and Ken Kerwin
tallied in the second half.
Nittany captain, John . Nolan,
Ken Kauffman, and Rog Nestor
each scored one against Cornell.
Baer Injured
Ernie Baer, starting the I'taca
game in :midfield,-Was also a cas
ualty.in the third quarter. He was
cross-checked roughly, knocked
unconscious, and was carried from
the game. He suffered• no serious
injury, and is expected to be in
shape for the game on June 8 with
Cornell.
Mery Snyder, who wa s taken
out of the Syracuse tussle, started
the second half of the. Cornell
fray and played for ten minutes.
Indications are that he 'will be
able to .play in the final game.
State scored two in the first
period. and chalked up three more
in the second frame as Cornell
tallied one in each quarter-of' the
first half. • • • .
