Editor's Note: With sorority rushing' season in full swing, Pan hellenic President Priscilla Wagner wishes to have the following paragraphs reprinted from the February 11, 1941 issue of The Co- Edition, prewar coed publication. Authoress of the article, which appeared under the heading of Happiness Without' Fraternities, was Harriet Singer, '4l, then president of Panhellenic Council,. The time has come for many of you to make your decision— whether to join a fraternity or not, or which fraternity to join. You who are deciding which to join should by this time have met all of the girls that belong to the houses in which you are interest ed. Think carefully before you choose a fraternity, know all the, girls before making your decision; particularly the girls in the lower classes, for they will be the ones with whom you will live,. There are many points to be considered:before a choice is made and you must not be so set on join ing a fraternity that you will over look them. Are you able to meet the financial obligations and costs of the houses? Is that house ad hering to all of the rushing rules? If not, the group is admitting weakness, and you can be sus picious of any group that has to resort to trickery and unfair methods to secure pledges. How ever, friendship and genuine ad miration for the group are the main objectives and criteria for joining a sorority. It isn't the best looking house, the one with the most activities- or the best looking girls,--it is the group in. which you have your friends and in ,which you will be happy. Some of -you will be unable to decide before formal rushing ends. Don't rush into anything. You can always wait and make your de cision after rushing season. There are many of .you who do not care to go fraternity or who THE COLLEGIAN haven't the money or are, not be ing rushed. Fraternity is not a necessity on our campus and if you will just look around, you'll find 'many non-fraternity women who are very happy here. The ma jority of the women students are not members of any fraternity on the campus, so don't feel that you must join some group in order to have friends and be happy. There are many 'substitutes for fraterni r ties here on the campus, and you can each find some activity or fol low some interest which will take up your spare time. There are many non-fraternity girls who are outstanding in activities and are certainly well liked and respected by everybody.
