day night, they will be carrying
on a Penn State tradition of long
standing. Professor Hummel Fish
burn. head of the music depart
ment, is mot certain of the exact
date of the first Christmas Sing
but he believes it originated about
The formula of these annual
song-fests, sponsored by the music
department and the Christian As
sociation, has always been the
same; the head of the music de
partment directs; a brass quartet
accompanies; the College Choir
performs one or two specialty
numbers: a faculty member gives
a short Christmas talk; and every
one. monotones and all, heartily
joins in on six or eight familiar
carols.
No particular star has ever
been featured in the Christmas
Carol Sing because it is intended
to be a true community affair.
The most important people are
the students, faculty, and towns
people who enjoy vocalizing on
the old favorites.
Never in Professor Fishburn’s
■memory, has the annual event
been cancelled because of weather.
At times the thermometer has
bounced to the icey environs of
zero degrees, but this hasn’t stop
ped the show.
When the carollers gather in
front of Old Main on Thursday
night, the songs will be the same
as last year, lots of the people
will be the same, but there will .be
a new feeling pervading ' this
yuletide sing—the first peacetime
Christmas Carol Sing in four
years.
