In Slate 'Library Group
Three members of the College
Library staff have been named to
offices in the Pennsylvania Library
Association.
Mrs. Lois G. Patterson has been
re-elected chairman and Miss Ruth
J. Bickett was named secretary of
the Junior Members Group. Miss
Gladys R. Cranmer was elected
secretary of the Associatiou.
Additional staff members who
attended the convention in Phila
delphia last month include Miss
Mildred A. Ailman, Miss Helen M.
Cooper, Miss Elsie M. Kresge, Miss
Lela B. Marsh, Miss Kathryn V.
Martin, Miss Katharine M. Stokes,

Named to Committee
Dr. Edward Steidle, dean of the
School of Mineral Industries at the
College, has been named a mem
ber of a five-man committee to
make "Coal-for-Victory" awards.
The awards, which will be given
for increases' in production and ef
ficiency to meet scheduled require
ments for coal in' 1944, are being
sponsored by "Coal Age," a tech
nical magazine devoted to the op
erating, technical, and business
problems of the coal mining in
dustry.

Lit Majors
Form Club
English literature majors who
have formed a group, tentatively
named Belles Lettres Club, will
meet in 205 Sparks, 4 p. m., De
cember 7.
Officers elected at the last meet
ing are: Winifred S. Worrell, pre
sident; Jane Burleigh, vice-presi
dent; and Joan Hock, secretary
treasurer. Prof. A. Pauline Lock
lin and Prof. Douglas S. Meade
are faculty advisors.
Programs will include talks by
faculty members, discussions by
club members, current events in
literature, and the celebration of
significant anniversaries in liter
ature. All Liberal Arts students
who are majoring in English lit
erature are eligible to join.
The purpose of the club is to
stimulate and encourage the wi
der reading of good literature, to
promote fellowship among the stu
dents and faculty of the depart
ment, and to sponsor projeCts ser
ving to direct the cultural life of
the college community.
Dr. Lininger Appointed
Dr. F. F. Lininger, director of
the College agricultural experi
ment station, has been elected
chairman of the sub-section on ex
periment station work of • the- As
sociation of Land-Grant Colleges
and Universities.-
Dr. Lininger was head of the de
partment of agricultural economics
at the College •before his appoint
ment as director.

Debaters Meet
Haverford Team
Second in a series of inter-col
legiate debates held at the Col
lege will take place with Haver
ford College in 121 Sparks, 8 p.m.
Wednesday. Chairman of this
cross-examination style debate
will be Edward Zemprelli, mana
ger of men's debate team.
Haverford College speakers
have not yet been determined,
but those who will represent the
College will be Ralph C. John and
Sanford E. Rafsky. They will dis
cuss the following proposition:
'Resolved: That the federal gov
ernment should subsidize the
higher education of superior high
school graduates whose parents
are unable to finance such an ed
ucation.
'Members of the audience will
be invited to participate in dis
cussion in an open forum follow
ing the debate.
