Coed Ruling Body Now
Includes Five DivisioUs
Women’s Student Government
Association, governing body of all
women students at the College,
traces its origin from a two-branch
government established in the fall
of 1915 to its present constitution
which includes five different divi
sions.
Senate, highest body of WSGA,
exercises the power to act on leg
islation brought to it by the House
of Representatives or any other
body of WSGA. 'Endeavoring to
uphold its purpose “to raise the
standard of living of the women
of the' College,” Senate legislates
matters pertaining to the welfare
of women students with a tendency
toward fewer penalties and more
emphasis on guidance and coun
seling by fellow-students.
Composed of a senior senator,
two junior senators, a sophomoi'e
senator, and a town senator, the'
highest body also includes as ex
official members chairman of Judi
cial, representative of Collegian,
representative of Panhell'enic
Council, and an independent sena
tor.
House of Representatives
House of Representatives, under
lying body of Senate, draws a rep
resentative from each living unit
of upperclass women. As a lawr
making body, the House legislates
on all problems brought up by its
members of any matters recom
mended by Senate. The Speaker of
the House is traditionally the vice
presideht of WSGA. Secretary is
elected from within the organiza
tion.
This second branch regularly
conducts the annual Christmas
Fund Drive, which is divided
among Mrs. Hetzel’s Fund, Amer
ican Woihen’s Hospital, and the
Miitlin County Children’s Aid
Society.
Disobedience to WSGA rules is
dealt with .by the third branch,
Judicial Committee. Members of
this committee are appointed in
their freshman year by Senate tc
a four-year term of office. Two
members from each class are
chosen.
Sponsors Exchange Dinners
Junior Service Board, fourth
branch, has as its main purpose
that of transfer student orienta
tion. Recently the board has. spon
sored exchange dinners. Members
of Junior Service 'Board are nomi
nated by the preceding board, but
Anal appointment is made by Sen
ate. The body is composed of
women students who show an abil
ity,of leadership, but whtf do not
have too many outside activities.
'Last and most recently estab
lished branch is Freshman Council.
Hall presidents of coed living units
automatically are elected to the
council. Freshmen Council ex
plains to these Arst-year .coeds
elected to this branch what WSGA
does and the decisions it makes.
The council representatives in turn
relate this information to their re
spective groups. Freshman Council
was established in 1937.
