Lions Face West Virginia
ks Fail Semester Begins
.Coach Bob Higgins expects to throw' an all-freshman eleven
against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the first game of the fall
semester at New Beaver Field at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
With navy trainees absent mest of the week because of between
sotnestcr furloughs, the Lion mentor indicated yesterday that he
would rely on first-year men to stop the vaulted West Virginia of
fense.
Tailback Johnny Chuckran has been named captain oC the Penn
Slate football team for Saturday’s game with the Mountaineers. Hig
gins said that the 168-pound freshman had earned the honor for his
performance against Colgate last weekend
West. Virginia is the first of *-
five ait-civilian squads that the
Nittany Lions will face before
the end of the season. The four
teams Penn State has met so far
have had the help of navy-marine
trainees
Coach Ira Rodgers will bring a
team to State College which has
won two, lost two, and tied one
game. The Mountaineers fell to
Pitt, 26-13, and deadlocked Mary
land, 6-6. Both o£ the schools will
be pitted against the Lions in
November.
Higgins Loses Marines
With the loss ol all his marine
players, Coach Higgins will again
have a new backfield this week.
Joe Drazenovich will open at
quarterback instead of Earl Bruhn
who started against Colgate.
Chuckran will be the starting
left hall, and 16-year-old Larry
Cocney the wingbaek. A 1 Bellas
will complete the backfield at full
back.
Bob Hicks and Don Miltenberg
er will probably get the call at the
ends. John Stoken, however, will
break into the game early.
Two more freshmen, Howard
Caskey and Negley Norton, will
again hold down first-string tackle
positions.
John Simon and Jim Matthews
are the guards. They replace Bob
Rutkowski and Carl Dimmer] ing,
V-12 trainees who started last
Saturday in the Colgate game.
Bronco Kosanovich is expected
to once again play most of the
contest at center. He was the only

Chuckran Scores Tally
In Last Minute of Play
Tailback Johnny Chuckran’s
50-yard touchdown run in the last
minute of play gave the Nittany
Lions a 6-0 triumph over the Col
late Red Raiders in a bitter bat
ch' waged in a constant downpour
at Hamilton, N. Y., last Saturday.
With six marines missing from
the starting lineup, the Lion squad
entered the contest the underdog
and emerged the surprise team of
the week.
For 59 minutes the Red Raiders
outplayed the younger and less ex
perienced Penn State team. How
ever, with a little luck and a burst
of speed, Chuckran managed to
scamper down the sidelines and
record the only score of the game.
The skillful kicking of Elwood
Petchell set the stage for Chuck
ran’s run. Late in the final period,
Petchel punted out of bounds on
the Colgate four and the Red
Raiders never recovered from the
setback. After an exchange, Bob
Behrens punted to Chuckran on the
midfield stripe.
The freshman tailback grabbed
the ball on a bounce, cut sharply
to the right, and then outraced
three Colgate men after breaking
into the open.
A few minutes before, the Lions
were down to the Red Raider 14.
Coach Bob Higgins’ boys lined for
a placement wjlh Chuckran hold
ing and Taccalozzi kicking. It was'
a fake try and Chuckran was
nailed as he tried-to run with the
ball. Colgate then tcok over on the
19-y ard line.
Colgate bad the statistical edge,
registering .12 first downs to Penn
State’s 6 and gaining 198 yards by
rushing to 79 for the Lions.

Two Touchdown Passes
Penn State passed its way to a

It was the accurate right arm
of Freshman Elwood Petcliel that
put the Lions ahead after a score
less first quarter. The Easton tail
back threw two touchdown passes
in the second period.
The first went to Bob Hicks
from the two-yard line after three
attempts through the line failed
to score. The second pass was
caught’by Wingback Ed Meyer on
the nine-yard marker, from where
he raced across the goal untouch
ed. The aeriel was thrown from
the Bison 22.
Penn State scored again in the
final stanza when Johnny Chuck
ran smashed over from the two
yard line. The touchdown cli
maxed a 53 yard march by the
Lions. Joe Drazenovich kicked the
extra-point for the' second time
