Five of Coach Leo Houck’s best boxers leave State Col lege tonight at 7 p. m., bound for the National Inter-collegiate JJoxing Tournament to be held on the campus of the Univer sity of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.,, Thursday, Friday and Sat urday. -• ' r 'fm Ponn State’s chances of placing high in the tournament were raised yesterday when it was made known that the box ing team from Syracuse University, winners of the Eastern Tnter-collegiates in Syracuse several weeks ago, would not be entered in the Nationals. Syracuse lost the largest part of their team to the Army immediately after the Inter-col legia tes. ' The chief obstacle in the Lion’s path at the tournament will be the Battling Badgers from the University of Wiscon sin. who defeated the Lions in Ree Hall on March 19 by the close score of 414-314. The final bout between Frankie Ilaw rylak ,and Badger Verdayne John decided, the 314-31/4 tie. The Badgers will be the only team to enter a complete team this week. Present national champs in the Badger lineup in clude Cliff Lutz in the 155 lb. class and George Makris in the 175 lb. class. Jackie Grey, winner of the East ern Intercollegiate Boxing crown at 121 pounds earlier this month is entering the Nationals with a good chance to take the feather weight crown. Grey lost a close bout to Wisconsin’s Jackie Gibson in the Badger- meet, but he is definitely a mucin improved fighter and should be at top speed. Glenn Hawthorne, possessor of a hard : left hand and good boxing skill, is scheduled to enter the ring as* the Lions choice for 127 lb. honors. ... * .. . Jackie Tighe in the 145 lb. di wsidn-is the ; Lion’s most promis-j ing entry.’’Although. Jack lost out in The finals at Syracuse, he has improved immensely in workouts the last months. In the Wisconsin matches, he ; defeated Badger- Don Miller in an easy fight . . Lion Captain Billy ; Richards will be the Lion choice in the 155 lb. class; With a little luck in drawing his opponents, Richards should get at least as far as the semi-finals or even the finals. . Heavyweight. Franklie Hawry lak will complete the Lion five man squad making the Madison trip. Frankie is. the type of fighter that likes to stand up and slug it out. Loser by only a few points to Verdayne John in the Wisconsin matches, Frankie is sure that he can defeat the Badger boy in a return fight. ~ I'-. w PENN STATE PHOTO REA & DERICK, Inc.
