Wozniak's Final Period Goal Wins For Booters, 1-0

of the year, Walt Woznaik, used
as a •substitute forward in past
games, kept the. Penn State soc
cer team record unblemished
when he scored in the final per
iod of play to break a scoreless
tie "and give' the Lions a hard
earned victory over the Midship
men of the Navy, 1-0, at Annapol

Jeffry's team during the first
qbarter, the Middies kept the ac
tion almost completely in Blue
and White territory. The usual
high-scoring forward line was able
to make nary a shot at the Crab
town team's gtial while Johnnie
Struck, Penn 'State goalie, had to
make five brilliant saves to keep
the home team from scoring.
Gradually, in the second and
third periods, the Jeffreymen
penetrated Navy territory. Woz
naik's kick into the opposing net
can in the closing minutes of the
final quarter and this turned "what
looked like an extra-period game
into:a Nittany victory, the sixth
of_ the year for the booters.

Lions Impressive
In Taming Orange
Prospects of their team meet

nous to Nittany Lion gridiron
followers after the fine exhibi
tion of heads-up football display
ed by the Blue and White against
Syracuse Saturday.
While Penn was being upset
by an underrated Navy squad, the
Lions were in the midst of the
greatest come-back in recent
Penn State history. Pre-game
underdog, because of its pitiful
showing against West Virginia
the previous week, the Lion team
served notice that they are not
to be taken lightly frdm here on

The game lacked nothing in the
way of wide-open play, and for
awhile it looked as if a scoring
marathon was going to develop.
Lions Forge Ahead
For the first time this season,
the Lions found themselves on
'the long end of the score in the
opening minutes, but to the cha
grin of the 11,000 spectators, their
lead lasted for but 40 seconds.
After Colone had forced the
Orange back with an exchange of
punts with Ellis, Syracuse full
back, Sparky Brown got off on
the first of his three long Jaunts.
With the ball on the invader's
49 yard line, Brown hit inside
on the weak side, evaded the Or
ange secondary before being
caught on the 9 yard stripe.
Brown hit the line again to
score. Van Lenten's placement
was blocked;
On the first play from scrim
mage after Schoonover's kickoff
Whitsell, Orange half back, cir
'cled right end, caught the Lion
secondary flatfooted, and sped 75
yards for the touchdown that
evened the score. Vesper's place
ment put Syracuse ahead, 7-6.
Lions Rally
Colone and - Brown teamed up
early in the third period to put
State ahead 18 to 7. On the fifth
play after the half, Colone pass-
ed to Brown on the midfield
stripe. Brown wove through the
entire Syracuse team until a mix
up with an over anxious Lion
blocker on the one foot line end
ed the play. Brown crashed over
on the next play. Again Van Len
ten's placement failed.
The second touchdown of the
period came after a sustained
drive of 43 yards. Colone picked
up the last two yards and the
touchdown after Brown and St.
Clair had moved the ball down
field.
Johnny Jaffurs was the star
of the last quarter as he inter
cepted two desperation heaves to
get the Lions out of the hole.
IM Swimming
IM swimming contests will be
gin tonight when Delta Chi meets
SAE, 7 p. m. Immediately follow
ing at 7:45 DU will tackle Lambda
Chi Alpha. Alpha Chi Sigma will
swim against the Kappa Sigs, 8:45.
Independent meets will not be
scheduled until after fraternity
meets are run off.

Wernermen Run
Good Time-Trials
Displaying the best form of the
year, the varsity cross-country
team, led by Captain Norm Gor
don, posted their best time of the
season at trials held on the New
Beaver course Saturday afternoon.
Captain Norm Gordon surpassed
all previous efforts in completing
the five-mile course in 26:32. Curt
Stone and Joe Beach followed with
their best times of the season.
Coach Chick Werner declared
that the records were "encourag
ing," but warned that they could
not be compared with those posted
on the Van Cortlandt park course
in New York City, where the IC4-
A meet will be held Monday. The
latter course is much harder and
has a rougher terrain.
Yale established itself as a fav
orite along with New-York Univer
sity when it won the annual hep
tagonal meet on the same Van
Cortlandt Park. Yale captured
three of the four initial positions.
