60 Candidates Report For Fall Football Practice
1 Soccermen To Resume Practice Sessions
With their first contest with
Gettysburg, October 3, less than
a month away, Coach Bill Jeffrey's
3942 soccer squad will resume
practice sessions this Week after a
two-week vacation.
Practicing every evening from
7 till 9, the booters took advantage
of the Summer semester to thor
oughly condition themselves for
the Fall program.
Since Coach Bill perenially
turns out a championship squad,
possibilities for this year's team
which .has the advantage of the
two-months extra practice, look
promising.
The booters this Summer num
bered approximately 30 and with
the return of a number of veterans
who did not attend the June, July
and August term, the "Amiable
Scot" should have a comparatively
large squad to pick from.

Five veterans from last year's
squad attended the twilight scrim
mages this Summer. Captain Hap
Freeman, one of the East's out
standing fullbacks, Allen Heck,
another fullback, Johnnie Struck,
another in the long line of "mir
acle-save" goalies which Jeffrey
has developed, Max Chenoweth,
center forward, and Jose Lombana,
Latin American whirlwind made
up this group.
Practicing along with this nucle
us of veterans was a promising
group of move-ups from last year's
yearling squad.
So far Coach Jeffrey has not set
a definite date for new freshmen
hopefuls to begin practice but ac
cording to a statement made just
before the close of last semester he
will start sessions sometime this
week.

What seemed to be a dismal
picture of "what we could have
had if the draft hadn't caught us"
has been supplanted by a more
hopeful outlook by Penn StVe
football fans. The advent of be
tween 30 to 40 freshmen, and in
dications that the freshman rule
may be rescinded at an early date
makes the Penn State football
picture a Little more promising.
Despite the loss of 27 members
of last year's varsity and-.fresh
man squads, 10 varsity lettermen
and 19 numeral winners from
McAndrew's 1941 frosli squad are
among the bevy of candidates that
make up the largest roster in
Penn State football history.
Higgins will have returning
veterans in every position but
tailback and wingback. The most
difficult job will be to find re
placements for a first string that
should be strong.
Reserve power may be found
in the host of frosh candidates
among whom are: Joe Colone,
All-scholastic fullback from Ber
wick; Dick Knepp, 225 pound
tackle from Phillipsburg; Larry
Joe, Derry Township star -full
back, reputed to have been the
fastest gridder in schoolboy ranks
last year, probably will be switch
ed to a wingback spot.
Other promising freshman in
clude, "Whitey" LaFlane, Stowe
Township fullback; Joe Reno,
