Slimmer Practice Primes
Boofers For Isl Game
With an entire Summer of prac
tice sessions under their belts,
Coach Bill Jeffrey's perennially
strong soccer team should be in
proper condition to start Fall re
hearsals to prime them for their
first game with Gettysburg, here
on October 3.
Coach Bill and the booters have
practiced nightly since June and
during the last week of practice
conducted two intra-squad games
with which Coach Jeffrey was
"very pleased." The team, which
showed great strength this Sum
mer will be strengthened with
the return to school ofseveral key
men from last year"s lineup.
Aldo Cenci, 225 pound quarter'
back, will take. care the major -
backfield blocking assignmdnts
on Bob Higgins' 1942 grid ma
chine. Cenci may be have to be
a 60-minute man to eleviate the
shortage of seasoned performers •
at the signal barking position.

A Nittany Libn football team,
which forecasters were predicting
a few months ago to be one of the
most powerful grid machines in
the country, will open formal
practice sessions on September 8,
in preparatioh for what now seems
to be a not-too-promising season.
Originally regarded by Coach
Bob Higgins, beginning his 13th
season as Penn State's head coach,
as a potentially-great squad, the
1942 edition of the Blue and White
has been sadly depleted by the
long arms of local draft boards.
Seventeen members of the po
tential 1942 varsity squad, includ
ing 10 holdovers from the great
1941 squad and seven from Marty
McAndrews' undefeated fro s h
squad of last season, have answer
ed the call to arms.
The tragic death last week of
Dave Alston, potential all-Ameri
can halfback, the withdrawal of
his brother and running mate,
Harry; and the departure of Joe
Cackovic, all-state center and star
on the 1941 squad, brings the total
team losses to 20.
Gone also from last year's squad,
that lost to only Temple and Col

seven gridders who went the

of stars was the famous pas Sing

As yet, the Senate Committee
on-Athletics has made no move 'to
change its ruling which bars
freshmen from participation in
varsity sports, although six of the
Lions' eight 1942 foes will be us
ing first-year men. Action on
the liroposal will probably be tak
en in the near future.
All .it not dark for the Higgins- .
men, however, for the Hig and
. his staff still have quite an .array
of talent from which to pick a

ments in certain vital positions
will be lacking.

There seems - to be no lack of
material at the end posts with
Van Lenten, last year regular,
Bob Davis, Bob Walters, reserve
players, and a couple of sopho
mores, Baierl and Boyd, to pick
from. Johnny Potsklan, one of
the best defensive ends to hit
Penn State in ,recent years, was
reported to have been drafted,
but 'more recent word Indicates
that he.may return, to bolster the
terminal play.

draft. No less than five 200-
pounders have been lost. • Mike
