Hard Competition
Awaits Gymnasts
At NCAA Tourney
The Penn State gym team will
face a strong field when they com
pete in the NCAA tournament at
the U. S. Naval Academy tomor
row afternoon. According to the
contest officials 38 ranking per
formers have already entered
with a few late entries still ex
pected.
Although Coach Gene Wett
stone’s squad which, is the first
Nittany team to vie for national
honors, copped the EIGA league
title this season, Illinois and Min
nesota are favored by Baltimore
papers'to win the team award.
Navy has entered a full team
and will be strong contenders.
Army and Temple have also en
tered star gymnasts, while Chi
cago, Maryland, Prirfceton, and
Indiana are expected to send only,
their top contestants.
. The NCAA' rule banning the
rope climb from counting toward
team scoring and the substitution
of ( the long horse for this eevnt
will be contested before the tour
ney officials tomorrow morning,
Wettstone reported last night. The
Lion mentor felt confident that
either the rope climb event would
be included in the scoring or else
the long horse would be eliminat
ed.
The Illini acrobats captured the
Big Ten crown this year and have *
proven victorious in four out of the
five national tourneys since 1938.
Minnesota placed a close second to
Illinois in the midwest circuit this
season!
