SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1942 `Taming Of The Shrew' Proves Shakespeare Is Up-To-Date By ETAOIN SHRDLU "The Taming of the Shrew," by William Shakespeare, presented by the Penn State Players, A. C. Cloetingn, director, in the Audi torium, last night, as their twenty second anniversary pr duction. Directed by Frank S. Neusbaum. Scenes designed by Dorothy B. Sbott; Technical supervisor, Stan ley Danowski. ' This guy Shakespeare has been kicked.around in the academic groove for so long that it comes almost as a, surprise to learn that ,there is still a lot of life in the old • boy. For the sceptics who may .doubt, last night's completely delightful performance by the Players is reqUired•attendance. In the past decade Shakespeare has prchably authored more Broadway hits than any single playwright, but the most success ful of these have /been his trage dies. It is a pessimistic sidelight on thiss•thing once known as civili zation that while tragedy seems to be eternal, comedy is pretty ephemeral. "The Taming" of the Shrew," however, comes close to being an. exception. There are, of course, portions that don't 'stand tip when presented to a modern audience, but the show as a whole is as fresh, as • modern; and as funny as the most exacting ;playgoer could ask. , pominating. the show here as completely as he dothinated his ,Kate.was the performance' of Don ,ard Ilayler . as : , Petruchio: This is np reflection on the fernabiderof ttie eget. which, practicallSr with outs exception demonstrated that ha • it, d been 'earefulbe and ComPe tently coached'. Untistial, in any amateur pro dUction:—particularly of Shakes peare—is.the pace and timing that characterized last night's show. Although the various counter plots tend' at tines tO - slow up "The Shrew," this was a minor item. All this is a tribute to Director Neushaum. Fast-poving, sharp, and tremendously alive, the play seemed to last scarcely half of the two hourS and a half which it actually ran. Mrs. Scott's sets had no little to do with the merit of the show. They indicated careful research and painstaking work on the part of the construction crew. Costumes were colorful and elaborate.
