THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1942 iummiummillimmiiiiiimmuninmillimimmumil Between The Lions- With PAT NAGELBERG Sports Editor Our Academic Deans Rumor, emanating from a good source, has it that some of the deans of the different schools of the, College were all in favor of abolishing intercollegiate athletics for -"the duration" at a recent meeting to discuss the proposed changes in the academic schedule. We don't .know what the out *come of all this will be, but - we're willing• to lay a 'wager that Priesi dent Hetzei.will never permit this sharp curtailment of sports to' go through unless he deems .it neces sary for . the general welfare. Our prey has taken a very keen in terest in State's athletic program all along and believes greatly in the :benefits derived from whole some competition. Still on the same subject, it is very probable that the spring sport schedule will be carried through until May 16 at least, or one week beyond the end of .the semester. In this manner, nearly all of, the scheduled events; with the excep tion of about seven baseball games, 'will be completed with lit tle inconvenience to anyone. Some of the athletes will be forced to leave immediately after graduation but there will be enough of the underclassmen left to capably represent Penn State. The worn-put handballs are in one of the chemistry labs being soaked in an acid solution until they are usuable again. A request has been sent out by some of the participants in the tournament for some slightly used handballs. Any contributions will ,be gladly accepted, Hanin added. In the event the third semester is approved by the Board of Trustee's, it is very possible that none of the events will be called off at all. In that case, freshmen who en-. tered the College In September will be eligible for varsity com petition in the latter part of May. Some of the current yearlings may be needed to fill the shoes, of the graduating seniors or other ath letes called, to service. BTL The question of making fiesh men eligible for varsity teams hasn't arisen locally up. to date, but it's bound to come up in the Fall when the absence of upper classmen will -be felt. Such col legiate leaders as Harvard and Dartmouth have already taken this progressive step, their action no doubt • being based on exper ience gathered in World War 1. When the proper time arrives, our athletic heads can be counted on to do the right thing. . r . • . ..:-.;;;;?'„ •:',,•..'' i I s. r r - :•.',:'::, '1.i: ,. ..... Unlike many collegiate basket ball teams, the Lion basketeers hale developed into an unusually well-balanced scoring machine. 'This is evident in the fact that five of the first seven men have scores ranging within six points of each other. Elmer Gross, senior co-captain, is second high with 51 markers. (IT'S INFORMAL) Fencers Receive Invitation To Intercollegiate Tourney Performances In Past Cause Of Present Honor Consistently fine performances by Penn State fencers for the past few seasons have matured into an invitation to take part in the East ern Intercollegiate tournament this year, it was stated last night. The Nittany fencers wil linvade New York City for the intercolleg iate competition on lMarch 20-21. Leading teams of the East will test the Lion's skill in one of the young est sports in the College. Army, City College of New York, Columbia}, Cornell, Hamilton, Har vard, MIT, Navy, NYU, U of P, Princeton, and Yale are member colleges. Dr. Krutter's swordsmen will meet Navy, Cornell, CCNY, and NYIJ, in dual meets prior to the Intercollegiates. Inexperience may greatly hamp er this year's team, Coach Knitter revealed. Only two veterans re main from last year, Captain Dick Harder and George Gimber. Most of the team prospects consist of sophomores. One junior and one senior, both lacking varsity exper ience, complete the outlook.
