Valentine's Day Gets
New Wrinkle Via WRA
Si. Valentine, a bishop and a
martyr statred this rush on the
post office when he was put to
death during the persecution
period in Rome on February 14,
270 A.D. It later became a cus
tom on the eve of St. Valentine’s
Day for guys and gals to meet
and draw lots, and each fellow
got a lady friend for his valen
t.ne.
Shakespeare took up the theme
by alluding to February 14ms the
day for love birds to mate. And
comic valentines, verses and
telegrams and flowers have
brought the celebration up to
WRA sets the pace for local
lovebirds with its annual Sweet
heart's- Dance planned for White
Hall from 9 p. m. to midnight
tonight. Women began this dance
as a part of the recreation pro
gram in 1939. when proceeds
were used to purchase equipment
for the newly-opened White Ha.ll.
La4;t year 275 couples attended
the dance and the $125 profit was
contributed to tire student loan
fund.
Tonight's affair promises to
carry out the tone of the day with
special lighting effects, valen
tines and hearts, and Mr. Cupid
himself on hand. Couples are re
minded that all'doors to White
Hall will be open, and that Rooms
2 and 103 will both be used as
checking rooms,
WRA asks that couples refrain
from smoking at the Sweetheart’s
Dance

to tomorrow night’s formal din
ners were delivered by the 13
sororities last night as intensive
period in' the 1940-41 rushing
season closed at 9 p. m. A strict
silent period will be in effect un
til 5 o. m. tomorrow.
All invitations are to be ac
cepted or refused according to
Panhellenic President Harriet
Singer ’4l.- Written replies are
due : at Student Union between
1 and 5 p. in. today when sorority
rushing chairmen may call- for
them.
A rushee may attend two for
mal dinners if she is still un'de
cided, but must indicate which
■ time on her acceptance. She may
not stay at one house longer than
one and one half hours.
Deadline for submitting lists
of bids to the office of the dean
of women has been set for 10 p.
m. tomorrow. Rushees will re
ceive their ballots before 10 a.
m. Sunday and must indicate
their preferences by marking ‘T’’
"2" or ‘‘3” beside the name of
the sorority.’ Rushees have been
especially advised by Miss Sing
er not to mark a second or third
choice for the sake of going sor
ority. They- should be positive
that they would be willing to
join that house.
Preferential ballots are to be
returned, to the dean of women’s
office as soon as possible to expe
dite the bidding. As soon as at!
lists are completed, sorority
rushing chairmen will be noti
fied. lists will be distributed, and
houses will notify their new
pledges.
