Phone 2158 THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Game Is First Loss To Mountaineers Since Lawther Came Here By JOHN BAER A Mountaineer basketball team did something in Rec Hall last night that West Virginia hasn’t been able to do since John Law ther became Penn State cage coach—beat the Lions. The score was 35-29. Elmer Gross opened the scor ing with a foul just after the start but from then until midway in the first half State went score less while the visitors chalked up 10 points. In the half the Lions tallied only two field goals. Except for that early foul by Gross, West Virginia led all the way. State managed to pull up within four points, 33-29, with one minute, 10 seconds to go but Jim Ruch scored to make it 35-29 and the Mountaineers froze the ball for the remaining seconds. One obvious reason for State’s loss was poor shooting. The Lions shot 50 times but made only 11 for 22 per cent—far below aver age. West Virginia tossed in 41 per cent, 13 out of 32.
