Scveral weeks ago you publish

of 943.
Saturday, (whether it were for
reasons of a personal nature or

t that reveals remarkable feeling
of, unity. Because it would have

Reader Asks Help
For Library Lounge
To the Editor:
Do the male students of Penn
State College know
. that there is a
lounge in the basement - Of the Li
brary that far exceeds the lounges
of the various theaters in town?
Do they also know that the lounge,
up until today, was bare of all
furniture? There are at least a few
students who like to smoke while
they study and a lot more who
cannot study unless they smoke. I
am in the latter class.
I went to the head librarian and
asked him if it would be all right
to put some old chairs in • the
lounge for a lot of hard-hit smok
ers who had to trudge .to the li
brary to get a two-hour book and
trudge home again because they
couldn't smoke in the library. And
the hardest part of all, get the book
back in time when they had fin
' ished. To my surprise, the head
librarian told me that this empty
room was originally intended for
a regular smoking lounge with all
the fancy furniture (etc.), but that
the shipment had been mixed up.
He,, was very nice, add he said
that if someone supplied the ash
trays, it could be used immediately
as a lounge until the furniture ar
rived. He stressed, however, that
it must be kept orderly and news
papers should not be strewn about
the floor.
I appeal to student opinion and
a couple of generous fraternities
to supply some old stand ash trays
if they, the students, really want to
use the lounge. And I think they
do, for I saw a couple of poor
fellows sitting on the floor trying
to study by holding their refer
ence books in one hand and their
cigarettes in the other.

Architecture Students
Presented High Awards
Four Beaux Arts Class B awards
and an Emerson Prize medal have
been presented to architecture stu
dents. Prof. Kenneth B. Johnstone,
head of the department, announced
the honors.
First Mention Place was award
ed to Edward G. Petrazio '42 for
his work on the problem which
was a ski club in the mountains.
Penn State entered 7 students in
the competition which attracted
about 200 entrants.
Milton Schwartz '42, Charles
Goldberg '42, and Melvin Ander
son '42 secured First Mention
ratings.. ,
First Medal in the . Emerson
Prize competition was awarded to
John R. Suydam '4O. A rostrum for
a Pin-American congress was the
subject of the 10-day problem.
"This is the first time in the his
tory of the department that any
student has won four medals in
four consecutive competitions,"
remarked Professor Johnstone.
"Suydam sets a new record."

3,500 Students
In Christmas Sing
- About 3,500 students and towns
people assembled on the terrace of
Old Main last night to hear and
take part in the annual Christmas
carol sing, which is rapidly be
coming a Penn State tradition.
Words to seven carols were
flashed on a screen and the large
gathering burst forth in booming
refrains and swelling choruses.
Their voices released their Christ
mas spirit as they sang "Adeste
Fidelis," "Hark the Herald An
gels Sing," "It Came Upon the
Midnight Clear," "0 Little Town
of Bethlehem," "We -Three Kings
or Orient Are," "Joy to the World'
and "Silent Night."
All-College President Arnold C.
Laich '4l, introduced Prof. Hum
mel Fishburn,' of the music de
partment, who directed group
carol singing. The College Choir
gave an impressive rendition of
"The First Noel."
Harry W. Seamans, general
secretary of the PSCA, read a
Christmas selection which con
sisted in part of an essay on
Christmas spirit' written by Her
bert Nipson '4O.
After the last carol had been
sung, the singers remained quiet
and heard a rendition of "Silent
Night" as performed on the Old
Main bells.
Following the caroling, a Christ
mas Worship Service, sponsored
by the PSCA, was held in the
Hugh Beaver room, 304 Old Main.
The student committee for the
carol sing was Justine Lougee '4l,
chairman, Dorothy F. Beam '42,
Sandy Carlton '42, Donald. C.
Kimmel '4l, and Frances G. Reist
'42.
Tau Phi Delta held its annual
Christmas banquet last night. Jack
E. Paulhamus '43 and John A.
Mattoon '43 acted as co-masters of
ceremonies.
