The Lions
WITH DICK PETERS
Weekend Resolutions
That the Lion Navy soccer game
'wasn't as close as the 2-1 score
would indicate. The Nittany kick
ers outclassed the Middies during
the first half like a steak does a
hot dog, and only because of State
injuries were the Sailors able to
score in the second act. In case
it's slipped your mind Saturday's
win was number 58 in a row with
out a loss.
That the IC4-A meeting of cross
country experts, "Willy the Wab
bit" Smith and Les Mac Mitchell,
'l\TYU's' defending titleholder, will
'be as big a battle as the recent
Harmon-Reagan two-ting circus
on the gridiron. "The Wabbit" con
tinued his winning ways Saturday
in a neat first place against Man
hattan. Smith churned through
driving rain to clock in 27:51.2,
while his bosoni foe, MaclVlitchell
was winning against Rutgers in
28:22.
That the star of the Lion football
win over South. Carolina wasn't
Chuck Peters who turned in ' a
couple of well-timed interceptions,
scored State's first touchdown, and
was a general nuisance to the
Gamecocks . all afternoon. Without
taking .anything away from the
blonde :tailback, the laurels go to
the "Nittany - Lion," who showed
more enthusiasm and spirit than
the other 11,000 fans in a lump . . .
a very sad, silent lump at that.
That maybe, after the Gamecock
fracas, Penn State's pass defense
isn't too bad after all. Those inter
ceptions by Craig White and Chuck
Peters were as near perfection
against aerial attack as one would
like to see.
That, without - boasting, this
writer gives himself a pat on the
babli for picking nine often . .games
Over the' weekend, and also for
calling: the State-Carolina- match
to a hair. Which all summed up,
jumps his average for the season
to .833 with 53 right, 1:3 wrong,
and four tied.

Harriers Point Toward
Pitt After Manhattan
Wins Saturday Tilt, 24-31
After suffering a third defeat
against top-ranking Manhattan,
24-31, the Nittany Lion harriers
are pointing toward their final dual
meet with Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Captain Bill Smith proved his
superiority against Manhattan
when 'he scampered over the wet
turf in 27:51.2, one minute ahead
of his closest Jasper rivals, Cap
tain Andy Neidig, Howie Bulger,
and Vin Tierman, who tied for
second place.
Fifth and sixth positions were
clinched by Pop Thiel and Chet
Smith, while Vern Kotz was forced
to slip to 12th when he lost both
shoes and had to run four miles
in bare feet.
Coach Chick Werner's biggest
problem is' to fill the fifth spot for
the Panther meet and the IC4-A
run - which is slated in two weeks.
"If I had a good filth man," Wern
er said, "our chances o'f winning
the Pitt match and placing high
in the IC4-A's would be good."
If Alex Bourgerie or Herm Goff
berg can recover from their in
juries in. time, or a strong con
tender springs from the other har
riers, Werner's problem will be
answered.
Banbury Breaks Jaw
As Freshman Gridders
Trim Corneli s 12-1
Dashing hopes that the frosh
grid team would be at full strength
for the Army game on 'November
13 was the disclosure yesterday
that Jack Banbury, ' first-string
fullback, 'broke his jaw as the
yearlings trimmed Cornell, 12-7,
Saturday.
Banbury was injured early in
the fourth quarter. Dr. Alfred H.
Greiss, team physician, said, al
though X-rays showed no sign of
a fracture, that "other indications
left little doubt that Banbury's jaw
was broken."
Against the Bear cubs Banks
McFarland chalked up' the first
Lions tally on a -reverse from the
five-yard line in the second•period.
The other State touchdown came
on a pass from .Chappy Peters to
Bucky Walters midway in the final
quarter.
THE DAILY COLLEGIAN
Pass Defense Stressed In Practice
As Six Gridders Report Injuries
Safely over their fifth succes
sive hurdle of the season, the un
defeated and untied Nittany Lion
gridders began priming yesterday
for Saturday's encounter with
Syracuse on the enemy's territory.
'The varsity squad •went through
a stiff workout on pass defense
against Syracuse aerial plays. The
tossers met with little success as
Chuck Peters and his backfield
mates intercepted pass after pass.
Absent from the practice session
were no less than six varsity play
ers sidelined terOporarily with in
juries received during the Lions'
12-0 victory over South Carolina. A
recurrence of Craig White's shoul
der injury appeared to be the most
serious of the mishaps. The veter
an halfback's status for the clash
with the Orangemen is doubtful.
Pepper Petrella received a brok
en nose Saturday but is expected
to be ready by game time along
with Pepper Ventresco who was
shaken up. Ken Schoonover,
sophomore end, is confined in the
infirmary with an attack of bron
chitis. Regulars Tom Vargo and
Wade Mori are suffering from a
sprained ankle and knee injury,
respectively.
Patrick Awarded Maxwell
Trophy In Philadelphia
Johnny Patrick, quarterback of
the undefeated and untied Nittany
Lion eleven, was awarded the
Maxwell Memorial Club trophy
for his sterling performance in the
Temple game at a luncheon ban
quet at the Warwick Hotel in
Philadelphia yesterday. Present
at the presentation of the award
was Coach Bob Higgins.
The ace blocker and signal call
er of the State squad was selected
by the Philadelphia sports writers
and coaches as player-of-the-week
for his unerring generalship and
all around play in the Lions' 18 to
0 triumph over the Owls.

Five down and three to go—
that's the 1940 record to date of the
