Numbers -Racket
' It is a columnist's privilege to
take a day off occasionally, on
which he goes completely beserk
and tries to figure out the score of
a coming sports event. The usual
method is to take comparative
scores and solve the equation.
So today I roll up my sleeves,
dust off the old adding machine,
and jump headlong into a pile of
figures to show you how bad Penn
State will put the' old slide-rule
on Lehigh's Engineers Saturday,
basing my predictions on scores of
games in which the Lions and the
Bethlehem team have participated
thus far.
The Nittany eleven will either
win 'by 61 or 76 points, according
to which way the wind is blowing
in Taylor Stadium Saturday after
noon . . : that is, if figures don't
lie.
The shortest route to a Lion win
prediction is by beginning with
the State victory_ over Bucknell,
9-0; Bucknell - topped Ursinus, 33-7;
Urlinus and . Dickinson fought to
a scoreless tie; Dickinson beat out
Delaware, 6-0; Delaware dropped
one to Hampden-Sidney, 7-0;
Hampden-Sidney edged Maryland,
7-6; Virginia trounced Maryland,
19-6; and Virginia smashed Le
high, 32-0.
All of which indicates that Penn
State sould beat the Engineers by
a score of 61-0..
Going the long way around, the
Lions triumphed over - West Vir
ginia, 17-13; Fordham shellacked
the Mountaineers, 20-7; the Rams
licked Tulane by the same score;
Boston College walked over Tu
lane, 27-7; Boston College also
stepped on little Centre, 40-0; Cin
cinati walloped 'Centre, 22-0; Navy
took Cincinnati, 14-0; the Midship
men also crumpled 'Princeton, 12-6;
Princeton nosed out Vanderbilt,
7-6; and:Vanderbilt tied Kentucky,
7-7.
Kentucky put the clamps on
Washington and Lee, 47-12; Wash
ington and Lee whitewashed
Hampden-Sidney, 26-0; Hampden-
Sidney squeaked over Maryland,
7-6;
. Maryland lost to Virginia,
19-6; Virginia blasted Lehigh, 32-0.
So you see, the Lions could also
take the Engineers by '76-0. Take
your pick, 61 or 76, either one will
sound good to me, and to metro
politan newspapers.

State College
THE DAILY COLLEGIAN
Jim Woodward, senior guard
who has been 'trying to crash into
the Lions' starting lineup for the
past , three years, may get his
chance thip Saturday when State
battles Lehigh at Bethlehem..
The only change contemplated
by Coach Bob Higgins at the pres
ent may involve the promotion of
Woodward to the first team in
place of veteran Wade Mori, out
of action for the past three days
with a blood clot on his shin. While
Mori is expected to be in uniform
and ready for action by Saturday,
his presence in the starting lineup
is problematical. .
Winner of a minor letter award
last year, Woodie has seen little
varsity action to date because of
the presence of talented and bigger
guards during the past two years
rather than lack of ability. The
hard charging lineman stood out
in spring practice this year and
was slated for regular duty in the
fall. Fate intervened, however, and
he was sidelined for three weeks
with an injured leg prior to the
Bucknell game. Line coach Joe
Bedenk rates him one of the most
improved players on the team.
The rest of the lineup will prob
ably remain unchanged. Earl
"Sparky" Brown will retain his
fullback post after 'the commend
able performance he gave in his
varsity debut last Saturday. Bill
Smaltz, regular number three
back, is still ailing with sprained
ankle, while his understudy Ralph
Ventresco will give his knee injury
a r rest until next week.
The Lion backs were put to a
stiff test defending against Lehigh
passes yesterday for the third
straight day as the squad was
rounding into shape for the trip
Friday morning. -
Niffany Lion Harriers
Struck By Injury Jinx;
Three Men On Sidelines
Hitting Chick Werner's cross
country squad worse than the local
draft board ever could, the injury
jinx has diminished the harrier
squad to only four competent var
sity starters.
Captain Bill Smith, a one man
team in himself, Chet Snyder, Pop
Thiel, and Vern Kotz, who hasn't
fully recovered from a previous
lame leg, make up the skeleton
crew, the smallest squad in Penn
State's hill and dale history.
Because last year's freshman
harriers weren't even fit to com
pete against good high school
teams, as Coach Werner terms
them, not one man from this year
ling squad has been able to plug
the huge gap' caused by the grad
uation of Frank Maule, Len Hend
erson, and Herb Nipson.
To make things worse, Al Hour
genie, second best varsity time
maker, Herm Goffberg, and Howie
Wheeler upset- the harrier apple
cart when they received their in
juries last week. Bourgerie, who
was released from the College In
firmary yesterday, and Wheeler
are. expected to return in time for
the Syracuse meet on October 26.
Goffberg's ailing leg may keep
this sterling runner out of varsity
competition for the, second straight
year after he placed second in the
freshman IC-4A's two years ago.

Varsity Soccermen Hold
Scrimmage With Frosh;
Gurcay Stars For Cubs
With Coach Bill Jeffrey starr
ing for the freshman soccer squad,
the varsity has been scrimmaging
daily with the cub team in prep
aration for Saturday's game with
Bucknell, the toughest outfit the
Lions have encountered this sea
son.
Playing the type of soccer Jeff
rey likes is freshman Rimzi Gur
cay, Turkish refugee, who displays
excellent technique in handling
and passing the ball.
Last year the Bisons held the
Nittanymen to a 2-0 score, and
with several lettermen returning
and a wealth of reserve strength,
Coach Merle Edwards hopes to
avenge the gridiron defeat handed
Bucknell three weeks ago.
