Bucknell Stresses
Passing Attack
While the State Lions are put
ting on the 'finishing touches for
Saturday's opener with Bucknell,
Coach Al Humphreys has seen
drilling the . Bisons through, long
aerial practices indicating that the
visitors' chief weapon of attack
will 'be in the air.
Since the Thundering Herd's
supply of backfield material is
none too plentiful, Humphreys
has been giving everyone of this
year's contingent of candidates a
chance to pass. Laverne Dueger
and Mel Knupp are among the
outstanding tossers with Fred
Fahringer and Gene Hayes, ser
ious backfield threats, also dem
onstrating their ability in this de
partment.
The Bisons' pass formations not
only give more of the backs an
opportunity to throw but also al
low for more potential receivers.
In the latter department, ends
Fred Gore and Jesse Mair will see
action against State.
A number of sophomore line
candidates• have been demonstrat
ing their value as Bison reinforce=
ments this fall. The most prob
able to crash the lineup are center,
Stephen Sokol, guard, Phillip Van
Sant and tackle Jim Fennell.
The 29-man Bucknell squad
will leave . Lewisburg Saturday
morning by bus for State College.
Fencers Warm Up
For Hard Program
Varsity fencing practice got un
derway yesterday, the swordsters
getting an early start to warm up
for another "suicide" schedule.
With the best fencing teams of
the country on the list for Penn
State fencers, Coach Harry Krutter
will have to keep his boys stepping
to stay on the blue side of the
ledger.
Since Krutter took over the fenc
ing team four years ago, the team
has piled up a total of 16 victorys
to 9 defeats while playing against
the major . fencing squads of the
East.
Speaking of this year's schedule,
"Doc" Krutter dourly predicted
that "we dOn't stand a chance
against N.Y.U., Navy, or Seton
Hall." With luck, he hopes to make
a better showing against the other
teams listed, though even there,
he insists, victories are far from
sure.
With Seto Hall the only newcom
er, the Nittany swordsmen will
tackle the following schedule this
year:
Jan. 24—Seton Hall, away.
Jan. 25—Army, away.
Feb. B—Navy, here.
Feb. 15—CornellSyracuse, away
Feb. 22—Pennsylvania, here.
Mar. I—Temple, away.
Mar. B—Lehigh, here.
Mar. 14—Rutgers, away.
Mar. 15—N.Y.U., away.

A One-Act Play •
Scene—,New Beaver Field. Time
—Any afternoon about four o'-
clock. Characters Bob Higgins,
Marty McAndrews, Al Michaels,
Earl Edwards, Joe Bedenk, foot
ball players, and Yehudi (denoting
anyone whose name we didn't
know).
Yehudi (running up from cam
pus)Hey Hig, here's those pic
tures of Saturday's scrimmage
against the frosh.
Higgins—Got that one of Pepper
Petrella's run? Or didn't you get
any action shots? •
Bedenk (looking at films)—Who's
this blonde? How did she get in
the middle of our football scrim
mage?
...
Higgins—l'll take a look at that
Yehudi (sitting on the bench)—
Hey Earl, where were you scouting
over the weekend?
Edwards West Virgina. Saw
Greensburg Hi play Friday night,
saw the West Virginia-Westminis
ter game-Saturday and the Pitts
burgh Steeler-Brooklyn Dodger
game Sunday. I missed a prep
school encounter.
Yehudi—Hey Marty, who's that
little freshman back?
McAndrews—Hey frosh. what's
your name?
Frosh footballer—Martin.
McAndrews That's a good
name.
Michaels—Listen, manager, we
gotta have some new balls out•here
for punting practice. It makes all
the difference in the world when
you're kicking a new one or an
old one.
Football player—Hey Joe, look
at this dog. He won't let us alone
so we can practice.
Bedenk—l'll practice you. Quit
teasing that dog and start pulling
out of that line before I kick you
and the dog off the field together.
Dog—Woof ! ! !
Frosh Attack Improves
In Scrimmage With J.V.'s
Although more than a few rough
spots—especially passing were
evident, the yearling gr i dde r s
showed improvement as their of
fense got its first real test in yes
terday's scrimmage against the
junior varsity team.
Pass defense was another glar
ing weakness as the J.V.'s, led by
dimunitive Bill Mazzocco and Sam
Kopach, unwrapped a surprisingly
good aerial atack. Early in the
scrimmage the junior varsity grid
ders set the freshmen back with
two consecutive heaves that net
ted a total of 35 yards.
Jack Banbury, freshman full
back, showed plenty of power as
he drove through the J.V. line
behind efficient blocking by Aldo
Cenci, quarterback.

Boofers Keep
Feet Warm
With the first triumph of their
1940 season and consecutive vic
tory number 54 behind them, the
Lion soccermen are diligently prac
ticing every day in preparation
for the next tilt scheduled with
Western Maryland on October 12.
The two sophomore fullbacks
who replaced Bob Sehuler and
Dutch Lange did a very commend
able job of filling the shoes of the
former Nittany stars. Also out
standing was Captain Walt Hoster
man who played brilliantly 'both
on the offense and defense.
