Chuck (Peters is rounding into pi. ying shape but should his shoulder fail to heal properly, Hig gins intends to keep him out of the Bucknell game next Saturday rather than risk a serious injury. The veteran halfback caught punts and Jacked in yesterday’s workout, but stayed out of any contact work. -For the second straight day the varsity was pitted against the freshmen. Marty McAndrews’ boys were given the ball on the varsity’s lOryard line to test the latter’s --Coal-line defense. Needless to say, it took the cubs quite a few tries to make the necessary yardage but their -performance was commend able considering the little practice they’ve had. All four of Penn State’s goals were scored by sophomores who will have the opportunity to repeat the performance in tomorrow’s game. This year, having lost only three of the mainstays of last year’s team, Coach Bill Jeffrey’s lads will again attempt to preserve one of the most brilliant records in col legiate sports, a record of seven years standing during which 53 games were played without a loss. Last year all freshmen were re quired -to wear “Beat Pitt’’ and “Beat Penn” namecards before those grid contests and the Lion football team defeated both teams with what was termed an upset by leading sports writers. T b/b frosh blossomed forth Thursday with “Beat Gettysburg” signs. Will the seemingly infallible tradition continue? Tub thumpers are beating out miles of copy every day, sending out col orful pictures of how Coach Glutz is whipping his Terrifying Tigers into shape for their opening game. Here are a few facts and figures, pulled from the ever-growing pile of propaganda coming into this office, which concern some of Penn State’s football opponents: Pitt plays only two games out of its back yard this fall, the opening game against Ohio State and the windup with Duke at Durham, which certainly is a throwback to pre-Bowman .days, when money talked in Panther circles, and a home schedule as attractive as this one would have meant a big pay off on the Stadium. We here at State are thrilled at the dynamiting ability of diminu tive Pepper Petrella, who can weigh in at 145 with his overcoat and ski hoots on. Not to take any thing away from Pepper, but NYU has a little lad, Joe Consagra, who has to jump on the scales to regis ter 116. Our only prayer is that he and Ferky don’t meet in the middle of New Beaver Field come November 16. Among the freshmen present at West Virginia this fall are five members of the 1939 All-West Vir ginia High School team, which in dicates that Bill Kern and his Mountaineer associates can plan to •have something down in them thar hills in a couple of years. Speaking of Bill Kern, the blond Hillbilly skipper has remarked that “when you can’t fit a boy into any other position, you can always make a tackle out of him.” Bob Higgins wished the same could be done with ends.
