Lawiher Considers Barr lion's Greatest lager “Not only a player’s captain, but a coach’s as well,” can be said about Johnny Barr, varsity guard and leader of John Lawther’s cag ers this year. Terming Barr as “the greatest player since I've taken over State’s basketball duties,” Law ther maintains that Barr not only shows perfect coolness in action, but is an excellent shot. Hailing from Shamokin, home town of Chuck' Peters, Barr trans ferred from Cornell after one semester. He injured his knee in a Cornell football scrimmage, and must wear a knee guard for pro tection. His brother Frank, a sophomore, exhibits the same family rugged ness and basketball sense, and is conceded a good chance of estab lishing a “Barr to Barr” combina tion for the Nittany Lions this season. Alec Templeton, blind pianist, has learned to play the chimes in the tower of the campanile at the University of California at Berke ley. ATTENTION STUDENTS... DAVIS Houck Defeated Boxing Champs Conqueror of champions yet never a champion himself—during his heyday as a fighter. That was the fate of Leo Houck, Nittany Lion boxing coach since 1923. From 1907 until 1923, Houck took part in approximately 200 professional fights, competing from flyweight to heavyweight: He won over three-fourths of his bouts, was never knocked out, and was knocked off his feet only three times. Houck was never officially re cognized as middleweight cham pion of the world because he was never able to get matches with the titleholders at the right time. He beat George Chip five times but when Chip became middleweight champion he would never fight the Lancaster middleweight. Like wise, Leo defeated Johnny Wilson two times before Wilson won the title. In 1912, Houck defeated Harry Lewis in France to gain the Euro pean middleweight crown. Later he won the same championship in Canada and the Cuban light heavyweight title. Leo’s Lion boxing teams have won the Eastern .Intercollegiate three National Collegiafc Boxing Association championship holders have been develo seven times and placed second five der Leo’s guidance times since 1924.
