PAGE EIGHT Soccer Team Will Strive For Eighth Unbeaten Season Opener Scheduled Here On September 26 Faced with a task that becomes harder year after year—keeping its undefeated record, now seven years old, intact—Coach Bill Jeff rey’s Nittany Lion soccer club will begin drilling some time during Freshman Week for its opening tilt here against Gettysburg on Sep tember 28. •Last year the hooters won seven straight contests, the only blemish on the record coming in the last game of the season when a deter mined Temple Owl team battled the local outfit to a scoreless tie. For the seventh time the Lions were awarded the Eastern inter collegiate title, sharing honors with Princeton. Toughest job for Coach Jeffrey will be finding a pair of fullbacks to fill the posts vacated by All- American Bob Schuler, 1939 cap tain, and Dutch Lange. Other losses because of graduation are Howie Wodock, Harry Peifer, Lionel Shaffer, and Bob Olmstead. All-American Gus Bigott, flashy Venezuelan, may be added to the “missing” list because of ineligi bility. He was out of school during the second semester and his status has not yet been determined. Returning to the bacbfield will be Captain Walt Hosterman, Don Megrail, Gazi Green, and Goalie WELCOME 'll MAKE YOUR CAMERA HEADQUARTERS The T>EN N OTATE JThoto oh op EXPERT PHOTO FINISHING f ; DAILY SERVICE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES 214 E. He sometimes thinks the strain of winning is too much and one time last year told his boys to go ahead and lose a game. They didn’t. Zen Laskarus. The starting line of Don Durain, Van Hartman, Bob Ernst, Woody King, and Harry Corman will be back intact. Four boys are coming up from the ’43 team with good chances of breaking into the starting varsity lineup. They are Bob Donaldson, Allan Heck, Bob Seavy, and Stan Prawdzack. The schedule this year will be almost the same as the slate which the Lions faced last year. Additions are Penn and Western Maryland. Carnegie Tech and Lehigh have been dropped. Inspired by the interest aroused by a soccer clinic held by a group of Harrisburg newspapers last Spring, the College will sponsor two clinics of a similar nature this month. Jeffrey will take a squad of booters to Lancaster on Satur day and the second clinic will be held here one week later. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN X-Counlry Has Bleak Outlook “The competition will be tough er and we’ll have a weaker team. We shouldn’t win any.” That’s the doleful prediction issued by Coach Chick Werner as he faces the task of guiding the Lion harriers through one of the stiffest schedules ever faced by a Nittany cross-country team. It sounds like the usual cautious pre season prophecy but Werner really seems to have cause for complaint. “An awful lot will depend on the. juniors,” he says. “If Herm Goffberg, Alex Bourgerie, George Harrison, Pop Thiel, Chet Snyder, and Harold Olsen come through we shouldn’t fare too badly but if they’re not in top form we won’t have a chance. Right now, Smit ty’s the only one I’m sure we can count on to be up among the lead ers.” On that point nobody should find any reason to disagree. Three years ago long-legged Bill Smith, now Lion captain, carried off top honors in the freshman IC4-A meet. As a sophomore he proved himself the standout harrier in the East by winning the varsity run. Last year he caught a stitch in his side but managed to come in third. In three years of competition Smith has lost only three races— the IC4-A’s, the nationals in his sophomore year, and a dual meet with Michigan State last October. Missing from the lineup this Fall will be a pair of familiar thinclads—Frank Maule and Len Henderson, senior .stars on the 1939 hiU-and-dale squad. They’ll be hard to replace. So will Gra ham Miller, Herb Nipson, and Don Hostetler. Swimming Tryouts Begin September 25 Swimming Coach Bob Galbraith .will call for candidates for both .varsity and freshman squads on Wednesday, September 25. Try outs will continue until Friday. Those selected as showing pro mise will begin an intensive three .week outdoor-conditioning period on Monday, September 30, with •the exception,of the divers, who ■will work out daily at the pool .under Assistant Coach Bill Gas kill’s tutelage. As the sixth season for this sport resumes with indoor practice on October 21, Capt. Bill Kirkpatrick will lead the best-balanced squad ■that has represented the College. With the first of eight meets scheduled for early January, the coaches and their veterans are re lying on early training to prepare for tough competition from Penn, Pitt, Carnegie Tech, Cornell, Syra cuse, Temple, Rutgers, and W & J. The frosh will tangle with Mer cersburg and Tech. Several out standing prep and high school swimmers are registered and eager •to match their natatorial skill with that of their opponents. Lacrosse Co-Capfain Named All-American George Ritter, co-captain and center on Nick Thiel’s lacrosse team last season, was named to the 1940 All-A!merican lacrosse team during the summer. Co-captain Bar. Buser was named to the third team. He played first attack and with Rit ter was named on the All-North team that played the South in Baltimore. ' Ritter’s appointment marks the first time in five years that a State man has been so honored.
