Yesterday’s meet ing was given over to medical ex aminations and warm-up drills. Only five Lions who saw any regular service at all last year will not be available for varsity serv ice. That, if nothing more, augurs well for a successful season if not an undefeated one. But there is more. Last year’s record of five wins, two ties and one loss was the best performance turned in by a Nittany Lion foot ball team since 1921. The frosh team, last year, was stronger than usual—much stronger than its record of two wins and three losses indicates. And finally, this Fall’s schedule looks easier on paper than last year’s. The toughest vacancy to fill will be the one at end created by the graduation of Captain Spike Alter. Graduation of two other very capable terminal performers, Gil Radcliff and Grover Washabaugh, makes it all the tougher. A possible replacement for Al ter was lost yesterday with the announcement that Cal Erwin will not be able to return to College this Fall. With the exception of Alter the line—Tom Vargo, Frank Platt, Wade Mori, ..All-American pros pect Captain Leon Gajecki, Mike Garbinski, Carl Stravinski —is back and rarin’ to go. In the backfield only Lloyd Ickes and Steve Rollins are among the missing but there is a. wealth of material for replacements. Bill Smaltz showed only flashes of his true caliber last year and Chuck Peters’ comeback in the last few games of the 1939 season may mean that he’ll be in top form for the coming campaign. “Pepper” Petrella, fiery little running back, who dropped out of College during the second semes ter, is back in uniform. He re gained eligibility ■by attending Summer Session. Other possible backfield start ers include Johnny Patrick and Craig White, regulars last year; John Day, Larry Eigenrauch, Len Krouse, Sam Kopach, experienced backs; and frosh standouts Galen Bailey, Earl Brown and Ralph Ventresco. Other linemen back by invita tion are Bob Brookes, Chuck Ray sor, and Bob Wear, centers; John Kerns, John Margerum, • Jim Woodward, and Don Yoho, guards; Len Frketich, Walt Kniaz, Joe Marcus, and Ben Pollock, tackles; Bob Davis, Jack Fallon, Lloyd Parsons, Bob Shrom, Harry Thompson, and Wilbur Van Len ten, ends. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN This Pair Guides Penn Stale Grid Destiny 99 Won, 64 Lost -1939 Record During the past year of regular session the Nittany Lion athletic teams mustered 99 victories as against 64 losses in both varsity and freshman competition. Outstanding among all perform ers were the varsity baseball nine which won 14 and lost two; the perennial championship varsity soccer team which completed its seventh straight undefeated sea son with seven wins and only one tie to mar a perfect record; and the freshman basketball aggrega tion which won its seven contests. A total of 10,678 Harvard Col lege alumni subscribed $107,089 to the Harvard Fund last year. Football coach Bob Higgins, above, led Penn State to its best grid season in 19 years last fall and has bright prospects for s a great 1940 record. Higgins was an all-American .when he played for Penn State 20 years ago.
