Penn State sent ten athletic teams into action during the past
weekend, competing in 11 contests Only one returned victor, that the
soccer team in an exhibition , match against F&M 'Things could look
bluer—that is if the bookers had gotten the boot, too. •
What hurt this department most. was the baseball team's loss to
Gettysburg With the Lion tossers on an 'eight-game winning streak
prior to the Bullet mixup, everything was ready to shoot the works
with a wonderful column on Lion baseball learns and their consecu
tive win spasms in the past. _
All that can be said now is that had the Lions , taken the powder
out of the Bullets Saturday for their 10th straight win, they would
have equalled the 1928 second iongest win column in Lion diamond
annals The best was in 1921 when a Hugo 11 . 1e7dek-coached team

going, it seems a portion of this column will have to be roped off
every week for the plaudits. of the speed boy: What Are you going to
do with a guy who just won't quit breaking or tying records?

State meet and runs away (and how) with first places in all three, in
the meantime cracking one record and tying another Last week it
was the Drake Relays and. Barney nabbed a win in the century. thete
His exploits in the past are too numerous to mention, ,
=What's the use of turning out a nice eulogy on Barney today 9 The
next time he runs, another bouquet of typewriter orchids wilt be m
order Heck, Barney you're exhausting this poor guy of superlative'

Sprinter Breaks 220 Record, Ties 100 Mark

With the last event on the program, the tilde t clay, deciding the
meet, a strong Ohio Stale track team edged the Lion liackmen, 64 1/6-
65 5/6, in the opener of the Penn State dual thick scason,heie Satur
day
Captain Nick Vukmanic and Baine3 Ewell skirled the. Nit
tanymen, each capturing three firsts and Ewell bicaking one Penn
State iecoid and tying another Ewell set a new mark of 20 8 seconds
in the 220-yard dash, bettering
the old record of 21 2 set by Bill
Bartholomew in 1928
Barney also won the broad
jump and tied the 100-yard dash
record of 9 6 seconds made by
Bartholomew and H L Henry in
1928 and 1906, respectively Vuk
manic took top honors in the jav
elin, shotput, and discus
Outstanding for the Buckeyes
was Jack Sultman who took first
place in the 440-yard dash, the
220-yard hurdles, and anchored
the winning relay team
Scott Moffatt turned an a bril
-1 hant performance by beating
Mike Linta, Buckeye pole vaulter
who topped the bar at 13 feet, 9
inches in high school Moffatt
won with the bar at 13 feet, and
tried to break the old Penn State
record of 13 feet, 2 inches but was
unable to clear the added height
The mile relay, the event that
decided the meet, was one of the
outstanding races of the after
noon Ohio took the , lead at the
beginning and kept five yards
ahead of the Lion runner until the
third lap when the lead lengthen
ed to 25 yards Ewell, anchor man
for ,the Lions, did his best to close
up the distance but was unable to
catch the long-striding Sunman
