Women’s Custo
ONCE AGAIN the women of Penn State unite to wel
come a new giouu of fieshmen. Heie you are, coeds of the
class of 1043, some thiee hundred of "oil —all with that wide
eyed exclamation maik stamped on your faces. Ah. it’s good
to see you '
It’s good to see your enthusiasm, youi, intei est, and your
ambition You’\e all come to conquer the campus;'in one
way oi anothei, and some oi you will succeed. ~ "
You will succeed, that is, if you go aboul it right. If
you set out to see things elearlv and to judge them’fairly.
If you name yourselves a goal and work for it without being
sidetracked l>> superficial things. 1

And you will meet a lot of things and people who will
do then best to sidetiack you. Social life is a necessary pai t
ot your college, but it is not the primary purpose. ~
Soionties are also a phase of college life, for those who
want 'them and can affoid them, but college is stilly college
without a soront.v And, while the collegiate slangiexpres
sions and manna isms that you can easily pick up may da7zle
the homexolks on your vacations, they only amuse the uppei
classmen - - ' -
You may have heaid tales about Penn State coeds You
may have heard stones of drinking, smoking, and house
parties And to some people, a Penn State coed means just
those things
n The question befoie you is Do you want people to think
of you and your college in,those terms 7
For, strange as it may seem, what people will think of
Penn State coeds from now on is up to you. You represent
a transfusion of new blood into the coed population. Just what
that transfusion will bring, whether new strength or merelv
decay, depends on you. It is m your power to bring with you
your ideals and make them part of the standards'of the
College Or you can mold yourself into just another Penn
State coed indistinguishable from twelve hundred others
But, no matter what you choose to do with your college
career, for the next year you aie freshmen, under our guid
ance, pi otection, and possible influence And so we rwelcome
you and wish you the best m Penn State
And any advice we could give vou would be only’ this
Don’t do as we did, but do as we wish we had done.
