The Lions

It is the usual custom at this
stage of the school year to fill these
pages with endless , columns of pre
season dope and pi aspects of the
coming football season But, berme
out sunbutned cutaneous 'Lovering
becomes its customary wintry pai
loi, try to give you freshmen
and haughty upperclassmen a brief
°same of what Penn State's ath
letes 'accomplished this summer
It seems, as fat as the Nittany
Lions were concerned, the summer
may be divieed into two main poi
tions—the Vukmanic era and the
Soose regime—neither of which
is by any means over.
We'll take it chronologically.
Early in the summer Nick "lion
Arm" Vukmanic established him
self as the country', number one
javelin thrower by contining the
crowns to add to his two 'memos
corquests in the Penn Relays,
where he established a new record
of 223 feet 10 1 / 4 inches, and the
IC4-A title
Constricting the fact that he
cached the top last yeah, as a
sophomore, it certainly isn't too
much to expect to we Vukmanie's
name head the list of Olympic }AV
elm prospects for 1940
And Billy Soose, Penn State's
fistic pude and boy, who, went to
Hollywood lto hdcome a middle
Weight seiniation, is eat phesent
wound these pacts, having sung up
alow mope ,mph essive vietoi ies
But the toughest competition is
still in the offing Theie is no doubt
that the middleweight division pre
sents a gioup of briers - any, one
of whom could be-recognized as
champ. When you're fighting in a
class that, contains such standouts
as Al Hostek, Fi eddy Steel, Young .
